"A Day at The Square - Volume II"
3 Wide's Picture Vault and R&R Productions are proud to release another DVD that truly captures the magic that was Flemington Fair Speedway on dirt. You'll feel like you're sitting in your old grandstand seat listening and watching the Rookie, Sportsman, Late Models and Modified's go 2 and 3 wide around the square from this July 1982 "Day at the Square."
The DVD captures the bright afternoon action of heat races for all divisions, through the early evening consolation events, and finally a thrilling modified feature in the dust and darkness that ends in true "3-Wide" action. (Due to poor lighting at the speedway and limited video technology, the modified feature action is dark, but the action is so exciting that you'll feel like you're there looking through the dust on your goggles watching to see who takes the checkered flag!)
Grab Your Ticket and Take a Seat... All action contained on the DVD was filmed from the section above. It's the closest you can get to being there without getting dusty!
108 Minute DVD - $29.95 plus $2.50 Ship/Handling = $32.45

Almost all of my e-mail correspondence to you since I purchased Day at the Square Volume 1 has included a note letting you know that I was looking forward to part 2. I was expecting the same type of footage that was included in part 1, just more of it.
I was wrong. It's much better overall than the 1st video. (Which, by the way, was an excellent product in its own right).
Part 1 gave us a lot of short racing clips, with a 1/2 season's worth of different cars. Part 2 gives us a Saturday afternoon during the summer of '82. Starting from the 1st Sportsman heat, thru 1 of the Modified Triple 20's Features, you get to hear and see the beauty that was a day at Flemington Speedway. I was happy to see the Late Model program shown in part 2. I did miss them in part 1 (although #1 did have the mighty Midgets).
This video really captures the excitement that a lot of us feel is missing in today's dirt track racing scene. It was recorded at a time just before the big aerodynamic Modified bodies slowly came in and took over the sport, so there are a lot of different body styles on the track. It looks like there were still a lot of Gremlin bodies available in 1982, but there were also a few Vega's, Chevettes along with plenty of attempts at making sheet metal look like it came off of a real car somewhere. Of course, some don't even bother to make it look like any type of stock vehicle, which adds to the charm of it. The biggest difference between part 1 and 2, is that the camera was zoomed in a lot closer in the second one. You can really see the car detail, and the drivers working hard to negotiate the difficult "5/8" mile Flemington track. In my opinion, it doesn't really get much better than a big block thru 3 & 4 at the Square. 3 wide coming out of the 4th turn was a thing of beauty, and you'll see plenty of it on Day at the Square pt II.
And the Audio? Let me tell you. If you ever sat in the grandstands you know how LOUD it was when the field came down for the green flag. It's all captured here in all of its wide open header, fuel injected, big block glory. Bill Singer's race calls are even clearer sounding than I remember them being live, and the trumpets blasting "CHARGE" when the field comes out of 3&4 still get the hair standing up on my arms.
Being a Modified fan to this day, I still attend as many races I can each season. I've always been partial to Dirt Modifieds, so I can't say that any era was better than another. But in the late '70's thru the mid-80's this sport was very healthy as you can see from the car count and the crowd in the stands on this video.
Pam and Steve Barrack were nice enough to give me a job at the speedway when I was about 13. (which I needed because it guaranteed that my parents had to take me to the track each race), so I spent a lot of time there from 1980 - 1983. This video is like a time capsule for me. Hitting 'play" on the DVD player took me back to a time where I probably walked 3 miles a night back and forth selling programs in turn 1 & 2, and the best of the best waged war on (and off) the track every weekend.
A HUGE thanks to whomever sat in the stands with the camera on their shoulder for a whole Saturday night. Because of that dedication we have this great piece of history to enjoy. When I attempt to video at Grandview occasionally, I can only last 3 or 4 laps at a time.
The only 2 small issues I found with the video are mostly due to technology. First, a couple of the edits are rough for a purchased DVD. Again, though, it's kinda part of its charm. And lastly, the specific camera that was used wasn't meant to film under the night-time lighting conditions found at the track. There are a lot of lighting "trails" across the screen (which was common with video cameras of that era), but that happens only during the last 5 minutes or so. Even with that, you can still see Pauch in the "L" car clean house using his outside groove.
The verdict? If you're a fan of Dirt Modified history, or ever spent a night at the Flemington Speedway when it was still dirt, buy BOTH of these DVD's!

Here's a Review from Vault Visitor Brian Loutrel of "A Day at The Square Vol 1"
I just finished watching "A Day At the Square" Volume 1 from June 1981. The only things missing besides Fusco's fries were the dust and the smell of racing fuel. Also, my father was missing. He died on May 21, 1981, and initially it was difficult going to Flemington afterwards without him. He first took me to Flemington in September 1965 for the Labor Day sprint car show (I was 8 years old) and I fell in love with the place. We were consistent regular attendees at Flemington beginning in 1970 when we moved to Bucks County (previously we lived in Long Island, NY) Eventually, I was able to cope with going to Flemington without my father. Going to Flemington in the months after he died was a form of therapy for me. Seeing racing such as this (among other things) helped me deal with his loss. He would have loved the heat race where Sammy Beavers in the Norcia 81 passed Ken Brenn Jr. with 2 laps to go.
Thank you so much for distributing this DVD. I can hardly wait to see "A Day at the Square" Volume 2. Between these two DVDs and the Snyder racing videos I have, I can relive memories at Flemington, East Windsor, Nazareth, Reading and Orange Countey. Everyone who is a fan of the current iteration of NASCAR racing should watch both of the "A Day At the Square" DVDs. It will show them what real racing is like.
