Comments: Comment from Russ Dodge:  Pictured are Jack Hart's number 1's at Alcyon Speedway on July 4, 1958. Researched records, thanks to Bill Skinner, show that Bill Lewis drove one of the cars that day. Old timers, who were there at Alcyon, study the cluster of cars parked in that corner of the infield! "Mentally sick people", like me, can tell which drivers and owners parked there. Hey!, stock car numbers are easy, identifying road cars, that's something else!! Pardon me for a little old timer's humor. By the way, if you can't identify the black Caddy, forget it!! Thanks, Russ Dodge

07/04/03 3-Wide Russ - I hope the fact that I was -2 (as in negative 2) years old in 1958 will factor in to your grading system!  Who's black Caddy is it?   (By the way, another great shot - I really like the pictures like this that not only capture the on track action, but also capture the atmosphere of the day and time.
07/10/03 Ralph Richards I believe Lucky Jordan ( of #2 fame) towed with a caddy to the races in the
late 1950's . Am I close Russ?.  Thanks, Ralph Richards
07/18/03 Jim Murrow Okay, Russ, c'mon - it's been 2 weeks, and we are obviously not getting this. Tell us who's cars these are, it's driving me nuts!

It's funny how the memory plays tricks on us. I can't seem to remember what street cars hardly anybody was driving in 1958. I do remember Jackie McLaughlin had a red & white '56 Ford F-100 p/u. I don't see that in the picture. Jackie later did have a couple of caddys, including a black Coupe De Ville, but that was a '59 that he bought used in '61, or '62, to replace his Caddy convertible that was vandalized at Flemington. (Somebody slashed the top and the interior, then smeared it with grease and excrement).

Bill Wark had a '57 Ford which is clearly visible in one of the other Alcyon pictures, but not this one.

A year or two later, Budd Olsen had a '59 Ford wagon, with "Alibi Inn" on the side, which he loaned to the speedway a couple of times to use as an ambulance when the regular ambulance was out on a run. (Budd's nickname was "Alibi Olsen" 'cause when you asked him how come he didn't win, [or what happened? - when he crashed], - he always had an alibi - so - when he opened a tavern in Paulsboro, he called it The Alibi Inn). He later had a new T-bird, (which I remember he brought over to Leon Manchester's place one Thursday afternoon, and bolted a set of Gabriel Adjustable shocks onto, set on firm), but in 1958???

As far as the black Caddy is concerned... I think I remember "Tas" having a caddy at one time, but I'm really just guessing. Jim Murrow
