Comments: Comments from Randolph:  I have attached a scanned photo of the car with Charlie behind the wheel, I must say that the location where the photo may have been taken remains vague, but it may have been at a brand new track that had opened in the Pottstown, PA area and we went down there for the opening day event. This photo was probably taken in the 1951-1952 era and I hope it will bring memories of the "Good Times" back to many of your viewers. If I can help with any additional information please ask I will do my best to respond.   Randolph Getz

12/27/03 Randolph Getz As at the time I was barely a teenager the history aspect of what was happening was not even a thought, but for a brief time 51 - 53 my Dad owned a stock car (pictured above) which was mainly run at Dorney Parks 1/5 mile track. My dad was Ammon Getz from Lehighton, PA and the car was ( two different cars due to un repairable accident damage) # 49, which was driven by Charlie Cregar.

During this time the stock cars which ran at the park were in the Sportsman class and mostly consisted of 34-40 Ford coupes and sedans all sporting the flat-head engines with all the modifications having to be internal, the outside of the engine had to look completely stock.  I might add that some of the internal work which was done to these engines and associated components was to say the least innovative and ahead of the times, with a good set-up these flat heads could turn in the mid 5,000 RPM range, and do it consistently.

01/09/03 Larry Jendras Jr Randolph, I have a photo with a #49 coupe with a similar paint job taken at Lanham Speedway in West Lanham, MD. near D.C. in the early 50's. Over the door is the name Carm Holden. Did your father ever haul down here to Maryland?

Thanks, Larry Jendras Jr

01/15/04 Randy Larry, I do know that on one occasion after my dad had been told that the car was strong enough to run against the modified boys they went down to a track in MD somewhere. I only remember conversation about the trip and the fact that the car indeed did run with those modified boys and was showing itself proudly when an accident occurred and Charlie managed to get stopped but the traffic behind him didn't. The car was done for the night and was shortly thereafter replaced with another as the damage to the rear of the car was un repairable. I do not know the name of the track but I am sure I remember it as being in the Hagerstown, MD area.

Thank you for your interest in the #49, I know we were all proud of her. I remember we hauled up to Pittston, PA and run at Bone Stadium, track is history for many years now, we won either 12 or 13 races (heats, consis, semis, features) in a row, the local racing association who had their favorites getting beat sent a letter to my dad and told him that they had decided to limit their membership to those who lived within 45 miles of the track, thus basically telling us to stay away.  My dad use to carry that letter around with him - we didn't think too much of their decision.
