12.13.09 George Perkins So many things to look at in pics like these, like the strap holding the door shut..is that a belt? The paint burnt off the running board from the exhaust. Looks like a two barrel on the engine. The mud deflector on the hood, license plate maybe? And my favorite, the way the sign painter painted the door handle. Some nice quality lettering by the way!
12.15.09 Jack Slover George Perkins - By any chance was your father's name Robert and mother's name Pat?

We love racing down here in N.C.

12.23.09 fltlnjok First, thanks Brian for a WONDERFUL photo. Your dad was a good and
honest friend for a few years.

The pic was more than likely taken either at Lloyd's home or his parents', probably in 1959. I had the pleasure of knowing both Ed & Lloyd at the time and this picture only barely shows the friendship between the two of them. What a terrific pair they were.

Ed drove a Brockway tractor for Schofield mason supply and Lloyd was a mechanic for Somerset County Parks. There may also have been a third partner named Ed Meyer. The car had a Y block ohv Ford in it and ran Sportsman. It was flat towed by Lloyd's pickup, a '57 Ford if I remember correctly. That probably was a belt or maybe a web strap holding the door shut. The local tracks then had a loose relationship with nascar the cars were required to be QUITE stock in some respects. Engine & body mfr had to match, only minimal body mods were allowed, etc. Most guys left the trim on. Note the simple roll bar. The body & frame provided strength.

Ed got hit in the eye with a trunk lid handle (off Pat Wolgemuth's 168, I think) and lost some vision. I believe this was when Jim Metzler started driving for them.

I think Ed eventually sold this car to Randy Morton and it became a 00.  Still white, but with the 13 painted over with a black 0.

Man, this was a great time to be around.

THANKS AGAIN Brian for a FABULOUS photo.

02.06.10 Ed Miller In response to fltlnjok

The picture was taken at my parent's house on Mechanic St., Somerville in
1958.

I then worked for Richard's Fuel Oil and Lloyd worked at Duryea Ford on Mountain Ave., Somerville. Lloyd and I are still good friends, Ed Meyer was and still is a friend but he was not a partner in the car.

The car was towed with my 1950 Dodge Van.

The door was held shut by a chain with a rubber hose over it.

Yes Jim Metzler, Ed Garrity and Randy Moton drove the car while I was in the hospital and I never returned to driving.

I believe the door handle that hit me in the eye came off Bobby Pickell car the 300.

The car was purchased by Tony Russo he kept the motor and sold the car to Jim Sueter from Mine Road, Bridgewater.

The car had a Fish Carburetor.

I'm now retired and living in Nazareth, PA.

Thank you for remembering me but I'm not sure who you are, you can contact me at por944@ptd.net .

Dan

Lloyd McBride is like a Second Dad to me, It was really funny how we met.  Apparently My Father and Lloyd grew up together but lost touch with each other.  My Dad and I were Fly Fishing on the South Branch In Califon and Lloyd and another kid named Mark drove past us. My Dad recognized him as he drove past and an old friendship was renewed.

Funny thing about this was my father volunteered me to build from the ground up, bare framed Midget Car for Kevin Scully. Who took it apart to get it Magnafluxed  and forgot how to put it back together.  I was either 15 or 16 and this was a 1963 Curtis Chassis the year was I believe 1979.

Lloyd was a great help with this since I never even saw one of these cars.  He helped a lot along with Japanese Blue printing Jack Harts (god Rest His Soul) Bob Bench owned Auto research Chassis Midget.

I am still very very close to Lloyd and his wonderful Wife Delores, he is a GREAT GUY and he still is getting around trout fishing with Flies with my Brother and I.
