from Russ: As "The Speedway" approaches its 50th anniversary,
I've sent a photos of Bob (Phil) Gemenden's coupe at the speedway. Gemenden was the first
modified to sign -in at the new speedway in 1959, to answer the trivia question asked with
the Tasnady 44 late model bodied car - click link below. https://3widespicturevault.com/60spics&vitals/d10.21.07_044_TAS_DAY_0062_1.htm
Note how the side windows were covered with "drop cloth" plastic to help with aerodynamics! Phil, racing under the name of his cousin Bob, started his driving career at Alcyon, while still a senior in high school. He was a quick learner and easily adapted to the famous 5 turned speedway. After Alcyon closed in 1960, Phil raced in Georgetown, Delaware, for several seasons, winning championships using the number 32 on his sportsman coupe. He finished out the 60's driving his signature red and silver, Ford powered 404 at Reading and East Windsor. Photo by Gemenden family member. |
