These were beautiful cars, Tom. You can see the color
in the "Jackie at Alcyon, 1960" color photo on page 9. After Jackie McLaughlin
drove the cars, owner Clarence Maul contracted with Lou Mood to build and maintain the
cars out of Lou's shop in Mullica Hill, NJ. This is one of, I believe 3, 111 coupes that
Lou built. Two that were built as 111s, and one that was built as a 29 car that Lou owned
and drove himself, but converted to a 111, and gave to Clarence Maul, after Lou totaled
one of the 111s. (Budd didn't show one night at Georgetown, so Lou drove the car himself
and totaled it). |

Tom, this is one of the Lou Mood built # 111s. Lou, who
drove his own #29 cars for many years, was known as "The Flying Farmer",
although racing was reputed to have cost him the loss of his farm. He always used the late
model type "disk" wheel on the left front, and a chrome wrap around bumper on
the back, (which you can just see the tip of in this picture), with additional painted
nerf bars around it. The car was painted bronze, as all the 111s were. You can see the
color scheme in the color Alcyon photo, with Jackie McLaughlin as the driver, posted
earlier. The car was very fast. Lou not only built the cars and the engines, but they ran
out of his shop, with Lou as crew chief. In fact, Lou was kind of a "Loner", so
he was pretty much the total crew. It was while driving this car, which ran regularly at
Flemington, and Georgetown Delaware, that Budd began wearing a "Uniform" of
sorts. This was before driver suits, of course, and most drivers were wearing a T shirt,
and jeans. Budd began driving in white pants, and a white shirt with 111 on the back.
