Comments: The next time some young whipper-snapper starts looking at you weird because you mention that today's cars aren't as cool as they were back in the day, make sure you have a copy of this picture so that even they'll have to agree with you!  Bob is another guy who along with Hearne, Stives and a few others in the mid 60's and early 70's, were still able to be competive on both dirt and asphalt.  Unfortunately, it wasn't too long after this that the cars became specialized and the days of changing tires and switching from dirt to asphalt became a thing of the past.

08/30/03 Kevin Budden Being an Eastwindsor regular in that era I don't remember this car, but man the car is awesome!  Kevin Budden...
08/30/03 3-Wide I'm not sure if this specific car was actually run on dirt, but it looks like it could have been.  I do know that Bob won on both dirt and asphalt in this time period and into the 70's I think...
08/30/03 Kevin Newman This car had many lives. Started out as Bob's strictly asphalt car. Bob had a serious wreck (on dirt in another car) and sold this car to Tom Green and it raced Wall as the white and gold #22. Once in the Garden State Classic, Tom had a two lap lead on the entire field (he was running fuel injection) .Soon, gas mileage got the best of him.

The car later surfaced as THE ROARING #20 owned by the Wishnick Brothers (WHITCO OIL), BILL and DON. I"M guessing around 1972. They hired Don House (XL-1) to wrench the car. Don had a new XL-1 coupe 3/4's done in Danny McGlaughlin's garage in Lakewood at the time. (I always wondered what ever happened to that car) The Wishnicks sent to California for a $20,000 motor and hired Tommie Elliott as the driver. It was a match made in HELL (bad chemistry). Tommie was leading the points when he quit the car after the Garden State Classic. Disagreement over the pit plans. GIL HEARNE went on to win the championship that year in his first Troyer car.

09/26/03 Dave Pyle I agree with everything Kevin Newman said except for what he said concerning this particular car. This car was driven by Tommie Elliott at Wall Stadium yes but in 1972 as the Les Sculthorpe/Farmingdale Mobil # 2JR. The Roaring 20 car was another former Rossell car that was built a year or so after this one.
09/26/03 3-Wide I'm relying on you guys to figure this one out.  Thanks for the input guys.
10/05/03 Tom Engelhard The car that became the Roaring 20's Auto was the former Tom Green #22.  Tom Green drove it in 1972 and Tommie drove the 2jr. Wishnick bought the car and Tommie drove it in '73. My Dad worked on the pit crew that year and was a good friend of Tommie's.
11/25/04 Barry Hulse The final time this car raced at wall, it was the number 73 sportsman, driven by Mike Kiernan. The car took a nasty flip, and was destroyed. When I saw the car in the pits on the trailer after the races, the square tubing roll cage was, should I say, mostly down at the bottom of the side windows. Another great car with a great history!

Bobby Rossell was my favorite driver. I remember him running for Dick Barney in the 14 sedan. I remember them getting into a wreck in the heat, come back out and win the consi, start 19th in the feature, and 10 laps into the main would be in the lead and go on for the win!

There ain't no damned tissue box running Wall today that can even come close to that feat today! (Except when the top 18 cars have their huge pileups where the first guy bobbles and by the time they are done crashing, the 18th place guy has run over the other 17 in front of him because you can't look through the car in front of you because of that stupid tail panel on each car!) Plus, the cars are so low that everyone lays down in them instead of sitting up straight like we did!)

12/02/04 Jerry H barry-related to dave hulse?
11/07/08 Bill Van It's about these -36 Chevy Standard coach bodies - once you cut them they're all alike... from the top, at least. Mr. Newman is correct with the car's pedigree & ancestry.

Sorry but Mr. Pyle is not: The 2JR coach to which he refers was built by Jules Furslew (owner) and later purchased by the Sculthorpe's of Wall/Farmingdale (Stives, Elliot), still as 2JR.

Strangely, the Rossell car (as the Tom Green #22) and the Furslew machine were both garaged in Farmingdale and at nearly the same time, the #22 at the shop of Ron Buck and the 2JR at the Sculthorpe Brothers' Farmingdale Mobil.

The fact that Tommy Elliot drove both cars at various & different times doesn't simplify anything either.
08.17.20 Russ Currie My favorite "Rossell Racer" - even though it had square tubing.  The coupes he built for Cagle for the 1971 season were close seconds.
