Photo ID # 12.27.03_039_OLS_REA_0060_1
Car #: #39
Driver (s) : Budd Olsen    not sure... maybe Mose Moore...,  maybe Budd Olsen..., ???
Location: Reading
Date: 1960's
Photographer: Bob Zellars
Photo provided by: Mike Feltenberger
Comments: Well, I hope it was fast, because it's not real high on my "Best of Show" scorecard...   While it may not have performed well in wind tunnel tests, it'd be kind of hard to bet against anything driven by Budd Olsen, or anything that said "Rio Bros" on the side, or in this case, BOTH!

12/31/03 Jim Brewer Joe - Wind tunnel tests aside, the Rio Brothers only won one Reading feature.  That was on July 30, 1965 with Jackie Evans in the seat of this car.  It was actually pretty nice looking with a very dark metallic maroon paint job.  The snub nosed look was a radical departure but a fairly effective way of lightening the car.  In this particular photo the engine and driver set-backs are very noticeable (check the location of the headrest). Thanks!  Jim Brewer
12/31/03 3-Wide I don't know Jim, it looks to me like it's handle like a shopping car, but what do I know... I do most of my racing from about row 8 of the frontstretch grandstand...

Thanks for the additional info on the #39

02/26/04 Earl Krause Looking closely at that photo, and recalling that maroon Rio No. 39 car from Reading, I believe it's in 1965 with Mose Moore driving. Budd Olsen had driven Dave Piscopo's white & red No. 39 the previous year.
02/26/04 3-Wide Thanks for the info Earl.  Considering that I was about 4 years old when this photo was taken, I think I'll just be the cut and paste guy here!    I did however talk to one of the Rio Bros at Ace Lane's booth this year during the MotorSports show and we were talking about how this picture looks like the driver undid the belt in order to make an adjustment or something which also throws off the look of the balance of the car.  If you look at where the headrest is, the drivers seat position is actually about 2 feet back from where he is.   Thanks Earl
12/31/04 Mike Feltenberger I just went back and checked the file for this photo.  I bought Bob Zellers Collection in 1998.  Everything was neatly filed and notated.  Above this particular negative and even on the 3 1/2 X 5 it says B.Olsen on it.  Maybe it was a one shot deal or maybe Budd needed a ride for the night, but according to Bob's notation on the negative sleeve and the proof print, it says Budd Olsen.

I was 9 in 1965 so I wasn't snapping this photo even though I did take pictures from the catch fence on the front stretch.   Guess we will never know unless we do some major enlarging. You are so right, the driver seat and the headrest would make even the tallest driver have a major problem being comfortable.

Jackie Evans could make any car FLY. He took Don Kreitz's 69 out for warm ups one night at Reading & everyone in the stands wanted to know who was in it.  That car never went that fast again !
