LES SAW ME STANDING THERE GOING TO TAKE A PICTURE OF THE CAR AND GOT OUT OF THE TRUCK SO I COULD GET IT WITH HIM. HE REMEMBERED SIGNING MY AUTOGRAPH BOOK THE WEEK BEFORE. 05.02.10 | John Snyder | Al "Bubbie" Walters and John Dinsmore were two of the most
innovative car owners of the early 1960s. You could also call this car the "Riegel
Paper Special." Both Al and John worked in the Milford, NJ paper mill's
maintenance department. It wasn't unusual to see other maintenance
shop---welders, machinists, electricians, plumbers, etc.---folks working on
parts and pieces for the cars. Even the bosses were in on the deal, as long
as the assigned work got finished. I was fortunate to spend four summers working in the same shop as Al, and often as his "go-fer." It was a great education in racing and certainly helped when I got with Leon Harrison and we built and raced the No. 8teen cars. Al Walters was a true mechanical genius; his cars were years ahead of what other people were building at the time. |
05.02.10 | 3Wide | The #808's with Les behind the wheel were just a little before my time but from the photos I've seen, they really look like well finished cars. |
05.06.10 | Ken Stull | Bubbie Walters was a friend of mine and I can tell you now
he was indeed a mechanical genius. His innovative ability and Les Farley's
driving ability were what made them so successful in running those small
block Chevy's (carburetors) with the big block injected motors. Bubbie (AL) knew small block Chevy's like nobody back then . He jump started the racing careers of Jim Laubach , Fred Bidwell , and a few others . He always had good drivers ...Doc Laubach , Les Farley , Ed Farley , Wilbur Force .... !
