01.08.11 Jack Reinhard I am quite sure that is George Tet in the 9. That was a Frank Conway car and one of the very few Mercury Comet bodies that was used in the 60's. The car was Orange and there was a painting of a Geisha on the car. It must be the Garden State 300 since this car was a weekly runner at Islip.
01.09.11 Michael Gill First let me say I love this web site! Not being born until 1969 I missed these cool old cars racing! I also have lived all my life in Mechanicsburg, Pa, so all my racing has been local dirt racing. As soon as I clicked on this picture, the very first thing I noticed is the very sharp, sleek looking #9! Excuse me if this question is out of line, but is it me or does this car look well advanced compared to the others in this picture?

01.10.11 3Wide I was born a few years earlier than you, but for me it was pretty hard to tell what was advanced and what wasn't.  It wasn't uncommon to see an old coupe or sedan bodied car show up the very next week with a Gremlin or Pinto body on it, which in some cases made it look like it'd be a rocket!  The #9 above is the only car without a coupe body and along side the old coupes, the "Comet" does look pretty high tech.  I'm not sure how high tech the rest was...  Maybe somebody with first hand info could add their thoughts....
01.11.11 Jack Reinhard The #9 Comet was owned by Frank Conway and that car was driven by George Tet (AKA Tetsui Fujiyama) and as I recall it was a standard for the era Chevy frame & a Flemke straight axle front end.

The reason it had a late model body was that Larry Mendelson (the Islip promoter) had a $50 or so late model body bonus for a while and a fair amount of teams used late model bodies.
