What a great photo!  1963 - Tas won 37 features in this car. The owners Paul Deasey and Charlie Wolf tried quite a few good drivers in this car, but no one handled the big Lincoln power like Tas.  He won 14 features at Flemington that year and had as many fans booing him as cheering for him!

The shocks stand out for me.  Back then there were no racing shock companies, the guys ran shocks for street cars which more often than not would today be PRO Shock straight 5, jounce and rebound performance being equal.  My guess here would be Tas wanted a stiffer shock to keep the left rear loaded on entry or maybe a quicker rebound to load the left rear coming off the corner.  Whichever one it was would be determined by what was on the left rear.

Today you can get racing shocks in all variations of jounce and rebound control, shocks you can adjust, and shocks you can adjust from the cockpit.  And only one is necessary.

Regardless the era, the springs/bars support the car, the shocks control the spring/bars.
