Comments: | Comments provided by Larry: Here is a photo of a
Maryland built car that did some racing at Flemington. It is a long story (which I
did on The Vintage Racer, called "Bug Killer".) Here is the short version: Baltimore's Johnny Roberts was racing the Central Pa circuit and wanted a "heavy" to beat the "bugs". He designed this innovative Hemi powered coupe to do so. Unfortunately he was killed at Lincloln Speedway on July 26, 1965. This photo was taken on September 6, 1965 at the Johnny Roberts Memorial Race held at Lincoln. The car sat in the pit crews garage untill Oct 20th, 1968 when Bobby Ballantine drove it at Beltsville Speedway. Enter Dawn Noble who purchased the car from Mrs. Roberts minus the Hemi engine. He installed a Chevy and painted the car his yellow and blue colors with a #14 and headed to Flemington. The car had twin I-beam suspension and just did not handle at Flemington. He then switched the car over to race at Atlantic City Speedway and did pretty well. Just before the Sportsman-Modified Race at Dover Downs in 1969, he sold the car to a New Jersey owner. Tommy Comerford drove the car at Dover and at Wall Stadium the next year. This is where I lose track of the car. Anyone with any information where the car went next and what it looked like, please contact me (Larry Jendras Jr.) |
