from Russ: On July 4, 1960, R.N.Masser Jr. took this shot of Glenn
Guthrie in his #118 sedan. Not "shooting" a lot at Alcyon Speedway in
Pitman, Ray told me he relied on Public transportation (Bus) to get to the races. His work
I rate as the best there is for quality and content. Color, digital whatever, a good black
& white print is the best! I labeled this picture simply "PURE". A flawless, neatly trimmed white '37 Ford sedan with red numbers! Glenn Guthrie, the 1959 NASCAR modified champ worked for Ford Motor Company in charge of the Presidential cars at the Whitehouse. He would "flat tow" his cars to Alcyon from Maryland, with a new Lincoln. I was told, that he wouldn't trade them in but chose to put them in storage, and at the time of his early death for Lew Gehrig's disease, he had a impressive collection. Glenn came back to New Jersey, with his car owner Allen Motherhead, for an Alcyon reunion Bob Sweeten and I organized in 1974. He was such a gentleman a genuinely nice person. I remember his comment when he was interviewed that day. He had a car that ran at Beltsville Speedway at the time. When asked about his racing activity, he replied "It's like my sex life, I still enjoy it a lot but I just participate a lot less often" What a joy to remember Glenn. |

07/17/06 | Diane | I really enjoyed going to the races back in the 60's and early 70's with Glenn and his wife Nina. Glad to see that others remember Glenn as a great stock car racer and a great person. |
