AARN: Popular dirt modified driver from the 1950s and 1960s Spud Murphy shown above. Spud raced at Flemington, East Windsor, Orange County and many other tracks in the Northeast in his signature number "77" and some will remember his #77 white coupe that Spud drove near the end of his career in the late 60s at East Windsor in the Modified division (shown above). Spud
was originally from Illinois, but lived in Florida most of his life. In the mid to late
1950s he was one of the first of many famous drivers to head north and race at the
local area speedways during the summer. |

03.15.10 | Bill Bivona | Is there anyone old enough to remember the 18 Coupe that
Spud Murphy ran back at Victory Speedway Orange County Fair around 1954 55.
I saw him run there it was my first race ever and I was bitten by the the
bug! I would like any information on Spud along with this 18 car he drove at
the Fair in 54 54 56, Thanks, Bill Bivona |
04.09.12 | Joanne Fairweather | In response to the question by Bill Bivona on Spud Murphy dated 3.15.10. The #18 Coupe was owned by Cliff and Hank Lust of Pine Island NY. I spent many summers with Spud Murphy he was a dear friend of Cliff Lust my grandfather. Spud would come up every summer throughout the 70's, 80's and early 1990's. He passed away Feb 2006 in Florida. Sped Murphy was his racing name. |
02.08.14 | Danny DeMarco | I recall Spud driving a yellow coach #2A at Reading and also a #80 at Nazareth, Flemington and OCFS that was larger driven by Bobby Pickell. |
