08/04/07 Don Nugent I dont see Kelly wearing a shoulder harness, I know he didn't like them and we all know what happened because of it....what a great driver he was.
08/04/07 John LeVan Dick Havens lived in Doyelstown & Joe Kelly (Dave Haupt) lived in Quakertown, they where friends on and off the race track.

I'm proud to say that I called both of these fine gentleman friends.

One correcetion - Tom Carberry was one of the mechanics on that car. It was owned by George Taylor - anohter fine gentleman.

Mr. Nugent - Joe did not wear a shoulder harness as it was afraid of being caught in a car while on fire. To this day I do not believe that fact had anything to do with his injuries. I honestly believe and feel that they where caused by Joe's helmet. Remember in those days the helmets where made and fitted right down to the base of the neck.

3-Wide - thanks for posting pictures of these two fine throttle jockey's - every one that I view brings back pleasant memories of my youth and memories of time well spent in the sport.

08/04/07 3-Wide Thanks for the info John.  I knew the #93 that Dick drove was owned by George Taylor, but I always thought that the #47's were owned by Tom.  I do know that the #47, #93 and the Piscopo #39's were all from the same area near the river in PA and were all lettered by Tom Backes.
08/04/07 Barry Miller The 47 looks like it later became the 39 or maybe the 39 became the 47?
08/05/07 John LeVan The 47's appearance to the Dave Piscapo (spelling) #39 can be attributed to the fact that they where both built by the same people. Ralph Barone & Shake (have forgotten his last name) where responsible for these winning machines.

I could be wrong but I do not believe that Tom Carberry became a car woner until after his stint as the chief mechanic on the Emmet Alfrey #47.

08/05/07 3Wide Fred Menschner and Ray Neary, both from around the Morrisville, PA area, spent a lot of time with Davey Piscopo and the crew and did mention that Ralph Barone (Uncle of 80's Flemington racer Bob Barone #7B) and someone they always refered to as "Shakes" were always working on the #39's.  I learned from Bob Barone that his uncle Ralph had worked on many Morrisville cars from that time.  The most recent picture posted of the Valiant #K46 shows Ralph there too.  Click Here for link to #K46 page and then hit then click on the "back" arrow at the top left of that page to return here.
08/05/07 George Perkins What a great shot of two really great drivers! Looks like a small block in the 47 and a big block in the 13. Interesting study in car attitude also. Havens is motoring right along and Kelly is fighting the tires busting loose on the straight.
08/06/07 Tammy (Taylor) Roberts I can tell you the real story behind the #47. The #47 was a joint venture between the Taylor Family , Tom Carberry, Ralph Barone, and Shake.

Sometimes in the best partnerships there are disagreements. Carberry, Barone and Shake took over the #47 after the Taylor Family decided to form a Family Owned race team. And that's when the #93 was made.

The original #47 was built and maintained in the Taylor's garage in Fallsington, Pa, until the breakup.  The reason I know the complete story is because George Taylor is my Grandfather.

So that is the complete true story.
11/09/08 Don Houpt It's true that my father did not wear a shoulder harness for fear of being caught in a fire. It's also true that he and Dick were good friends off the track....Great picture.

03.25.09 Sue Taylor Joe Kelly was my Dad! My name is Sue Taylor and I love this picture of Dick Havens and my Dad!! I have great childhood memories of playing with Dicks kids and eating his famous meat loaf off the track! Dick Havens was the first driver to get to my Dad right after his accident that ended his racing career.
This picture is great!!!
