Comments: Never saw this body style run at Flemington or East Windsor...  Always reminded me of the "bugs" that ran out in PA...  Maybe you guys who were at Reading back in the mid to late 60's can provide more info...

05.09.09 Pete Lovell Most rulebooks required that only modified bodies with solid steel tops could be used. That eliminated Fords produced before 1936. Reading raced flathead cars until around 1960, when they changed to running the modifieds. The Class A flathead bodies were mostly pre-'36 Fords. To try to get the flathead racers to change over to the modifieds, they allowed the pre-'36 soft top bodies for a few years.
05.10.09 Chuck Hassler Pete your partially right. I don't remember the whole rule but being before a certain year these cars were limited to one four barrel and no set back for the engine. The year for this picture is probably 1963 or 1964. Class A flat heads stopped running in 1962 at Reading. In 1961 and 1962 there were special 100 lap modified race at the end of the year. Thanks Chuck Hassler
11.30.14 Gary Eck That's the famous 3 minute clock on the stage. What year was that introduced?
11.30.14 3Wide I don't know, but I do know that there's a few tracks whose programs would benefit if they used the idea.  (Nah... I almost forgot.... Us old guys don't know what we're talking about.... All of our ideas are outdated...)

Pete, since the RSCA was going to go with the modifieds in 1963, the flathead owners were told that they could still use their old cars for the first year, but were restricted to one 4 barrel carb.  In 1964 ALL cars had to have a solid roof.

I think this is a shot of Shorty in one of Sock Valariano's flatheads that was changed to a modified for the early modified shows at Reading. Look at the wide tires and the front fenders, both of which were NOT part of a Reading flathead. Also it appears that the motor is a small block Chevy, NOT a flathead with a single chrome stack as was the norm. At either the first or second ever modified show at Reading Shorty,  in one of Socks converted flatheads lead with a few laps to go, only to suffer a flat tire. But I believe the number on that car was 16JR.  Thanks, Geoff
