Comments from George: Attached, please find 4 pictures I took as a young teenaged racefan back in the early 1960's. If my memory serves me correctly, this race night was a 50 lapper with many "hotshoes" on hand. We were very close with Jack Hart and traveled down to Georgetown with him. The 026 was driven that night by either Budd Olsen or Jackie McLaughlin. I think it was Budd Olsen behind the wheel because I think Jackie was running the Jordan 2 at the time. The 118 was driven by Glenn Guthrie. The brown sedan, without a number, was driven by Johnny Martin, who is standing next to his mount. He was the winner that night after a rather contested and heated race with the Jordan Deuce. Johnny was a terrific driver who won a number of races in Delaware and Maryland during that time. Of course the blue coupe no. 1 was Jack Hart's car. This was a great night of racing and I wish I would have taken more pictures. George Gwynn, Jr. Frederick, MD |

06.30.09 | Bill Skinner | These pictures apparently were taken at Georgetown 8/25/62
in a special Saturday night 50 lap, double points show where Jackie
McLaughlin blew a tire driving the Jordan deuce and spun off the third turn
while leading on lap 44. McLaughlin attempted to return to the infield
for a tire change, but a broken tie rod forced him into the wall along the
straight away and out of the race. Johnny Martin grabbed the lead on
the restart and held on to win driving Ed Henry's sedan which was normally
#231. A picture of the car with Johnny and his son appeared in the
newspaper the next day. Glenn Guthrie finished second in the 118, and he was followed by Horace Williams, Bob Pickell, and Phil Gemenden. Budd Olsen qualified for the feature in the 026 before a packed grandstand. Thanks, Bill Skinner |
07.02.09 | George Gwynn Jr. | Thank you, Bill Skinner, for the incredible race recap. That
was the exact night and I remember more than I thought, even as a 12 year
old, at the time. I clearly remember Jackie stopping on the middle of the front stretch, up against the wall, exiting the Jordon deuce and climbing the catch fence, while the starter was trying to bring the field under caution. While Jackie was clinging to the fence, the crowd erupted in a chorus of boos, upset at the fact that Jackie had once again caused a caution, while Johnny had the lead. It was a terrific night! |
