Comments: Great looking Sportsman coupe run by Dave Spurlin in the late 70's and early 80's at the Square.   Now I know why Dave isn't providing many pictures from 79 and up...He was too busy racing!

01/04/03 Dave Spurlin Here's a picture of the #42 in 1979.  I had a 350 too like Red Coffin except mine was only a 331! I wish I had his! The #0 coupe in the background is the former #00 of Buzzie Reutimann. I think it was driven by Lou Hahn. You can also see the #23 of Billy Cannon. I know the yellow body right next to us was the #1X

The #42 was an Ebersole copy built by Tea Bag  (WayneCoffey) from Markovich's. I bought it from Roy Ross (#71). It had an Epright Gremlin body at the time. The body I bought at a flea market (red #111, I believe it was a Banghart). You can see the #111 flip on the History of Flemington tape. This car (#42) was bent pretty bad not too long after this picture was taken when a power steering hose came off the cooler and I looped it in turn two. I believe it was one of the old Bob Rossell #56 cars with a different number who T-boned me and flipped end over end while I was just sitting there for quite awhile. He came roaring out of the pits and was a half of a lap behind and ran right into me! I didn't fix it because I was already building the next car and there was only so much money to go around!

01/19/04 Ricky Rutt The yellow gremlin next to the Lew Hann "0" is a rookie car that Lew Sr. owned.  The year was 1979.  The car was driven by Al Hummel and was the former Ford powered modified of Gar Frey.

The one that got away....  Earlier this week I posted a story about Dave (on The Message Vault). This is the car he regretfully sold. It’s amazing how close he replicated it. You’ve gotta love those coupes….. and coaches too. My first encounter with racing was in 1969 before the Gremlin/ Pinto craze. I’m sure there’s some blue chip cars still out there in a barn waiting to be discovered. Maybe a real gem!!!
