Provider's comments: Al started the 1974 season as a modified rookie in the highly respected Matt McMann purple #4 Modified. In only his 3rd race in the car, while running 4th in the feature, (with 2 to go), Al hit oil in turn 4 left by Bob McCollough’s blown engine and tapped the wall.  That was the last time that Al drove for McMann.   Al had to rely on his sedan to continue on into the season, but after a few flips, Al switched to a red #37 coupe (from Bobby Dragon), only to be involved in another spectacular frontstretch flip, which I think closed out the season for Al.

12/30/02 John Mc He was exciting, that's for sure. One of my favorite Sportsman racers, but he could wreck an anvil w/ a rubber hammer! Thx, JMc
01/01/03 3-Wide Nice John...where do you come up with this stuff -(anvil w/ the rubber hammer thing). Pretty funny stuff... Hey, I think we would both agree though that out of the car, Al was the exact opposite of what you would think  In the car, arms swinging left, then right, driving it in harder than most, bouncing off the boards, sometimes continuing on - sometimes the fence won... And yet in the pits, he would quietly keep to himself, working on the car often with his dad, just  getting it ready for the next battle....
10.24.09 Harry Gano Al was a total lunatic on the track. I always loved to watch him race.  He had no fear of other cars, the fence, and racing in any direction. I don't think he knew how to lift his foot off the gas no matter how the car was handling. Agreed, he was Jeckyl and Hyde, quite nice guy in the pits, Tasmanian devil on the track! Boy do I miss seeing great drivers race at great dirt tracks! Thanks three wide, a true pleasure to see these pics, but I feel older after looking at them.
