12/25/02 Dave Spurlin I believe it was Larry Taylor driving at this time.
12.17.10  Rich Storr  I have been a regular viewer of your website since my friend Jim Hall informed me about it 4-5 years ago and have decided to finally make a comment. There’s a reason I chose this photo to make a comment. At first blush, when I first viewed this picture I said to myself, “Who the heck would think to take a picture of this bucket of nuts and bolts?” Then I noticed the green pickup truck in the background and I started crying.

That pickup truck belonged to my Uncle Dutch Storr, who was responsible for operating the back gate that crossed over to the infield at Flemington. I started going to the races in 1974 when I was 12 years old with my uncle after Gerald Chamberlin won the first 2 races of that year. Frank Cozze was rookie of the year that year. I have very fond memories of all my uncles that worked at the speedway (Dutch, Slim the 4th turn flagger, Roger and Nub). But it was Dutch who would pick me up every Saturday at noon with my cousin Tommy Stover, and we would ride in the back of this pickup truck to the speedway. I sat in the back of that truck watching the races for all of 1974 until the end of 1975 before moving to the first turn bleachers to help save seats for my friends right above the Readington Fire Department’s concession stand. Sometimes Dutch would allow me and Tommy to open and close the back gate all to ourselves.

Like many of the viewers of your website, I cherish those days at the track. I used to think back then that when I was in my mid-forties, maybe someday I would take over operating the back gate from my uncle. I went to Flemington religiously from 1974 to 1981, the year Dutch passed away.

I did not miss a race during all that time. I am so impressed with all the things that your viewers remember and it helps me recall my own fond memories. I now am a regular attendee at Orange County Fairgrounds Speedway. Talk about taking a step back in time! They have some old pictures stapled to a wall where they used to make fried dough and a lot of them have seen better days, but you can still see them.

Thank you 3 Wide for helping all of us Flemington fans keep our memories green!

Sincerely,
Rich Storr
