It was the 2nd year for Al's Gremlin and this time (car was dark
blue in '75, light blue in '76 and white in '77. It had a 427 out of a
Corvette for all 3 years...) The chassis was actually a one off from
former modified driver (and current URC runner) Mike Kostic, who reached out to Al to see what he could do with it...
I think the car was actually pretty close to a Profile Chassis, but was
scaled down just a bit throughout... Even still, the car was pretty heavy, and looking back, its performance was probably
compromised by Al running used tires pretty much all the time... I
think Al said he had about $3500 into this car and at a time when other guys
were showing up with Grant King and Kenny Weld creations , it soon became quite an
accomplishment to win a modified heat.... or score a top 5 feature finish in
pretty much a home grown, leaf spring car. Here it is almost 35 years later and I notice celebrating the moment along the frontstretch fence in the background is Al's wife Peggy (in blue), possibly daughter Jennifer (white t-shirt) and son Alex (being held by Peggy)... And the guy with the plaid shirt and the "Cat Diesel Power" hat looks to me like a 15 year old future webmaster! |

10.27.10 | Charlie Miller | What a very special memory. It was a special time as well. Yes the little guy could still pull off the occasional upset with a win now an again. To be there and witness your hero doing just that , had to be a special moment. |
