Comment from Ed: Dennis ran at the Reading
Fairgrounds from about 1972-1975. He ran the twin 0, sponsored by
Ontelaunee Orchids. Last year at my photo stand at the Reading Mall show (2010), a burly man and his son in a wheel chair stopped to look at my photos. The young man insisted that they look through all of the photos...I asked "who are you looking for" and the son replied "Dennis Zerbe". The dad quickly said that "he won't have any of me, because I wasn't that good". I indeed did have 9 photos of him in the twin 0 car. I offered him the photos for free, but he insisted on paying...we worked something out. Later my Dad informed me that Dennis used to work at the end of the block that I grew up on as an electrician and that is why we had so many photos of him. I was honored to meet and talk to him. |

02.11.12 | Barry Miller | Thanks for posting this picture of Dennis, he was one of my
favorite "little guys" at Reading. My favorite memory of Dennis was from
1975, he was in this same car except it was white, blue and gold. He started
on the pole in his heat and he had a big lead after a few laps. Kenny Weld,
in his 91, got in second place and began to run Dennis down. He caught him
with about 3 laps to go and they ran side by side with Dennis on the outside
and Kenny on the inside. Neither one could shake the other and they took the
white flag in a dead heat. Dennis won the heat by a bumper, or less, and he got a standing ovation for his efforts. I will never forget that race, one of my favorite memories from Reading. |
