Comments: | Comment from Michael: Richie Evans at Utica Rome Speedway. Mr. Brockway (provider of the photo) is a long time friend of mine. He and Richie graduated high school together in 1961--he tells me that's where the iconic 61 comes from. And the car colors were their high school colors. |

06.22.22 | Michael E. Monnat | This photo you have posted of Richie Evans in the 1970's
section as coming from the Bill Brockway collection was taken at the
Lancaster Speedway not the Utica-Rome Speedway. Two things are a giveaway here. First off this was during the time when Richie was having problems with NASCAR because of his running Fulton Raceway and winning when he was supposed to be at Utica-Rome. He was running "outlaw" tracks three times a weekend, namely Spencer on Friday, Lancaster or Shangri-La on Saturday at Fulton on Sunday. Secondly the car in the background is a giveaway also. It's the #17 of Pete Hayes from Lockport, New York who was a regular runner at the Lancaster Speedway on Saturday nights and to the best of my knowledge didn't race at Utica-Rome. Thanks for your time and keep the good stuff coming. |
