Comments: Comments from Rich: Jimmy Horton in the car he designed himself.  Jimmy won a ton of features in these cars, always hugging the bottom I might add.  I always remember the Statewide cars having the highway sign on the back deck with the car number inside -  pretty sharp.

01/23/04 L Talbert One of the few who could bult a complete car himself and win . A complete racer would have been good in any era
01/24/04 Rob Spilatore (Spilly) Hey Rich, Your brother took some great pictures! I bet I was with you this day at East Windsor.  Rich is one hell of a model builder, and he had built a fantastic replica of this very car.  I remember the look on the Statewide boys faces when he showed it to them.  You still have that model, Rich?
01/25/04 Jeff McClung Jimmy won over twenty features at East Windsor with this car in one year in the late 70s. That was the most dominating performance for a single season I have ever witnessed, I am not sure but I think only one or  two other drivers won races that year.
01/27/04 John Armbruster I remember Jimmy, in this car, and Kenny Brenn racing to an almost dead heat for the feature win at East Windsor... they touched across the line, and Jimmy slid all the way across the infield and crashed into one of the push jeeps.  I'm pretty sure Brenn won that night.
01/31/04 Jeff McClung I remember that event very well and have seen a four or five picture compilation of the jeep actually being hit, something tells me we might see it at one point in the future on this site. I wonder if anyone knows any other drivers that may have won that year at EWS, Im not sure but I think Lee Devault may have won a race that year also.
02/01/04 Ned Stites III This is by far my favorite of all of the Statewide Hi-Way Safety cars.  I believe they were called "Crickets".   I was fortunate to have access to the
garage to see these cars being prepared.  I had lots of great times at Statewide and the guys there and George Smith Sr. were very nice to me.  I always liked the Statewide cars before the "Crickets", but when I first saw them, they really knocked me out!  They were also winners from the very start on all tracks.  I started to follow the Statewide Team whenever I wasn't working 4-12 and 12-8 shifts.   I haven't been over to their place in quite a few years, but I always keep an eye out for the latest edition of their stable.

We do a lot of talking about how great the Weld and King cars were and rightfully so. To me these two cars Jimmy Horton and the Statewide guys put together were among the best cars of their time. I also think they called them Crickets. No matter where they ran with them they were fast. I’m not sure how true it is but I think Jimmy said he took what he thought was the best of both the Weld and Kings and put it into one design. If there is someone out there who knows inside info about these cars I’d like to know if both cars were equal or was one better? Also am I right about there being two of them?
