01/26/04 3-Wide I got to meet George LeBlanc this weekend as Vault contributor Roy Schreffler needed someone to navigate while he drove through the streets of Staten Island on his way up to George's to pick up an old straight front axel.  George is a wealth of information regarding Weissglass Stadium and my guess is almost everything else that happenned in the 5 boros of NYC during the 50's, 60's and 70's when it comes to short track racing.  Thanks for providing the picture of Johnny.
01/27/04 Walter Onora I first went to Weissglass in the early 60's. Many fond memories of that track. Johnny Popick was one fine driver. Frankie Scneider was the track champion back in 1953!. John also flipped the same car two weeks in a row. First at East Windsor, the following week at Flemington.  Despite that, He was one of the best to come out of Staten Island. Look forward to see more pictures from Weissglass.
01/27/04 3-Wide One of my first memories of East Windsor from back around 1967 was a big #405 Sedan flipping down the frontstretch.  I've since found out that it was Johnny Popick.
01/27/04 Walter Onora Not only did John Popick flip that 405 sedan at East  Windsor, the following week at Flemington (this time the car had a falcon body) flipped as well! George can confirm this.
05/21/04 JOE BOKROS (THIS  STORY HAPPENED AROUND 1967 OR 1968.  WE HAD MADE OUR WEEKLY TRIP TO NAZARETH)

(A GROUP OF US) HAD TAKEN A FEW CARS TO A SUNDAY AFTERNOON SHOW.  WHEN IT WAS TIME TO LEAVE,  WE LEFT TO GO HOME AND FIGURED ANYONE NOT IN THE SAME CAR WAS MORE THEN LIKELY IN ONE OF THE OTHER CARS - WRONG !!!!!

MY BROTHER (JOHNNY BOKROS), DIDN'T CATCH ANYONE GOING BACK TO STIRLING NJ.  WE WERE HOME AND HE WAS STILL AT NAZ!

(HE WOULD HAVE BEEN STUCK) EXCEPT ONE GUY GAVE HIM A   RIDE.  HIS NAME WAS  JOHNNY POPICK!  HE DROVE THAT #405 THAT DAY AT NAZ.

TO GO OUT OF HIS WAY TO BRING SOME YOUNG KID  HOME SHOWS YOU WHAT KIND OF GUY JOHNNY POPICK WAS.   REST IN PEACE, JOHNNY.

01/09/05 KEVIN VARANYAK Wow from the looks of this car i'd say 60's not 1972 looks out dated for 70's to me my 2CENTS KEVIN VARANYAK
10/24/05 charlie I was at weissglass almost every sat nite from 1969 till it closed as my uncle was a cop at tottenviile precient (and few of the racers were arrested by him and his partner at one time or another) so my cousin and i had free roam of the pits...Popick was a great competitor and i remember him running a car that was a corvair body on a front engine frame....

If they ever build a nascar track in staten island...they better build a short track and bring back the grass roots racin that was weissglass...charlie
