Photo ID # a11.29.04_076_004_FLM_0070_1
Car #: #76
Driver (s) : Pete Chesson (we think...)
Location: Flemington (Thanks Herb)
Date: 1974
Photographer: Bill Young
Photo provided by: Herb Hoskins
Comments: This might be Stan Ploski in the #76 or if I remember correctly, I think Pete Chesson himself drove this car initially...  Once we figure that out, then we can figure where the picture was taken.  Could it possibly be the third turn before they put up the bleachers over there?  Track looks awful wide, but I'm thinking it's as the cars exit turn 3...

12/01/04 John Mc This is the 4 wheel independent car that was never worth a damn.   Peter (Chesson) never drove this one, but a number of other guys did, but never for very long. It was evil! Not sure who's in it here, probably Ploski. Even Tommy Gilman ran it once or twice.
12/02/04 George Yawger Don't think it is Flemington because there is no inside guardrail.    I'm going to take a chance an say turn three at East Windsor. Is that Craig McCaughey in Matty's # 4?
12/02/04 Rich Miller I only remember Stan driving this car once in the back of a heat, a shakedown run. If I remember correctly Paul "Sandy" Rochelle tried qualifying it the next couple of weeks before the car disappeared.
01/10/05 Nick Lombardi This car became the Pickell 300. He won his last race in the car at Nazereth. The car was a bear to set up.
01/27/05 John Mc This wasn't the car that became Pickell's 300, that car was the 1st one Peter had that was driven by Ploski, Osmun, and others. That was a good car, it had a fuel injected small block in it, and had an independent front end.

After Pickell bought it, he took it to Howie Cronce and had him put a straight axle under the front end, and basically convert it to a Burnett syle car that Howie was building at the time (for Burnett). He also put a big block in it.

The car pictured was the 4 wheel independent car that was basically junk. It was featured in Hot Rod magazine and was neat as hell to look at, but it didn't work.  It was built by Bob Dauernheim in Raritan (same building as Tony Feil), and had a CAE rear in it, similar to what was found in the Corvettes.

As a last ditch effort, Peter put a regular solid rear in it, took it to Eastern States w/ Tommy Gilman driving it, but DNQ'ed. I think it was the last time it raced, he then built a super lightweight car that a few guys tried, but that was a handful, too.    Peter was into trying new things, some worked, some didn't. That last car (the lightweight) didn't last long either, about the only guy to do anything at all w/ it was Jay Myers, but even he didn't do much. Supposedly that car weighed about 1700 #.

Chesson didn't really return for awhile, he was a behind the scenes owner of Vinnie Brown's sportsman car @ Flem, then came back 1st w/ Gary Butler, and then......you know the rest.
