From Russ: It doesn't get any better than this! I want to
share this beautiful Jim Simmons photo of the Anthony Furniture #1 at Reading, with Toby
Tobias driving. Also in the picture is the Gremlin of Kenny Weld. Jim Simmons, along with some fabulous color photos from Reading Fairgrounds, produced some VHS films. He put a lot of effort into getting the narrations accurate for whatever he produced. Toby, at the end of the'73 season dove the #1 to victory in the "All Star Racing League" season finale, held at the "newly opened" Bridgeport Speedway. |

03/20/05 | Matt Bahre | That's definitely the original Weld car and Toby in the Anthony's Furniture small block Mustang. I'm thinking the year is more like 75... |
Rich Hassler | 04/12/06 | Toby was the man! When I was 12 years old, I went to the blue star
diner in Stouchsburg, PA. (population about 300). The year was 1967. An unusual man with
curly brown hair and black frame glasses sat at the counter. He turned and said " is
that your boy, Harold?" My dad said yes, and he said "give the kid a chocolate
milk". I asked my dad who he was when we left, because a stranger buying someone something was not very common. he said "that's Toby Tobias, a race car driver at Reading." Even though my father of Hassler Brothers racing fame had a car and a lot of success with Jim Keppley, I was always a huge Toby fan. A great person and a great driver. I grew up at Reading Fairgrounds and will always cherish those memories. |

Tobias replaced Donnie Varner, who got off to a great start in this car before breaking his wrist in a freak accident at the Fairgrounds. Varner was never the same after that. Legendary Davey Brown turned the wrenches on this immaculate car. Tobias won the first night out, a 50 lapper over a holiday weekend. His performances over the rest of the year were so strong that he reached the top five in points despite missing the early part of the season. |
