Comments: Here's a car that I remember being driven on the dirt a few times at East Windsor with Pete Cobb (?) behind the wheel, but here it is in victory lane at Wall with driver Robert Stives at the helm.  I'm told that at the time of this photo, the car was owned by Steve Martin.

07/25/05 Bob Stives Thanks for posting the picture in the Vault.  I struggled to get started in racing, and didn't get to race for very long. I dreamed of racing since I was a teenager. Things didn't turnout like I planned, but at least I got a piece of it. Therefore, it means a lot to have my picture on your site.
07/25/05 3-Wide You got farther than I did Bob!  I dreamed of being a race driver as far back as I can remember...

Started gathering "woods cars" around the time I was 11 and went through about 7 or 8 of them before I got my license for the road.   Used to beat the hell out of them and even made an oval track in a field by my house to practice by broad sliding.  Got pretty good at fixing just about anything that could break on a 64 Chevy II.

When cornered by a high school counselor with the old "What do you want to be when you grow up" question, I quickly responded, "An Auto Mechanic", since at that time it made good sense that to be a good driver, you had to know a lot about racecars... and to know a lot about racecars, you had to be a good mechanic.   Besides, most racecars were kept at garages, so it was a natural, right?

WRONG.  By the time I had graduated High School in '78, I began to see the change from garage built racecars, to speed shop purchased racecars...  I realized that in order to be a successful in racing, you needed to have $, so off to college I went...  

While continuing to go to the races all throughout my 4 years, priorities changed....   and, well, whatever, I ended up helping out a modified team for a few years, before additional family commitments moved me in a different direction.

So here it is some 35+ years later (started going to East Windsor in 1966 with my dad), and except for 2 years racing motocross, and a few laps 2 years ago behind the wheel of Gene Stravinski's #7a during a day that he had rented the track for his crew, I find myself still enjoying the sport... but feeling like I left something on the table...  

Like you said, at least you got a piece of it.  Be proud -  all of you guys who did whatever it took to make it out there, under the lights...  even just a few times, who were a part of the show, should be proud.  You deserve it.

07/25/05 Pete L. I remember this car being driven by Pete Cobb at Wall, it was an Aqua color when Pete ran it. Also remember Pete Cobb driving a white coupe with a red vinyl roof it was # 1 Ithink, Steve Springsteel later purchased the coupe. I also recall that when Don Stives' son Bob drove the Gremlin, the car was tan.  It also has a stainless steel looking diamond tuft appearing interior. I was there the night that the car caught fire in the infield.
09/08/05 jerry hart I was also there that nite when the car caught fire/if this is Pete Cobb's old gremlin maybe the rotors made it catch fire-remember his brakes glowing big! time during a feature

(Question:  any chance that the prev person to make comment-poss pete lavance/former starter at wall?)

This car was purchased from my brother, Steve Martin (not Springsteel) from Pete Cobb.  And yes, it was like a turquoise blue when he bought it.  My brother painted it Tan. My late husband, John Burns drove it a few times also.
