Comments: I don't think I ever saw Jim drive Modifieds living a sheltered live down here in Jersey, but he was one of my favorites when it came to Indy car racing.  His driving style in the Champ cars back in the 60's, his story of coming back from severe burns, his attempt to qualify a front engine car at Indy (in the Mallard?) well after the book on the roadster had been closed are just a few of the things that I remember about "Herk".

07/02/06 Larry Jendras That photo has got to be from Langhorne. Notice the car in front. It is the pink and white XL-1 with probably Sammy Beavers driving.
07/02/06 3-Wide I thought it was probably Langhorne too, but didn't want to rush to any conclusions since the photo info included the location as Lancaster...   This infield looks kinda familiar.  If it is Langhorne, remember the center area where kids used to ride their mini-bikes?
07/02/06 Scott Pacich If I'm not mistaken Hurtubise used to race a few (maybe 4) times a year at Fonda to be eligible to run the RoC and Langhorne. Doesn't he have a win at Fonda?
07/02/06 Tom When did Sammy Beavers drive the XL-1?
07/03/06 Larry Jendras Sammy drove the XL-1, renumbered 91 in the 1969 race. He wound up on his roof after a tangle with the 09 of Bryan Osgood.  Hurtibise finished 9th in 1969, 5th in 1970, 34th in 1971.
07/17/06 Eric Lorenzoni From what I read and understood about Jim H, was that he loved to race, had a great sense of humor, and loved to have a good time. I recall reading a Sports Illustrated article about him when I was a "pup" (1978?) where he talked about a serious Indy crash at Milwaukee and told the press "That was the crash that made me famous"; a popular Milwakee Beer slogan at the time.
09/01/06 Derek Hauck The #2 of Hurtubise is from Langhorne 1970 race of champions, i have a bunch of photos from that race all with the date on the photo, I have a photo of Jim sitting in this car with his helmet off.
02/06/07 Keith Swisher Growing up on the backstraight of Trenton Speedway, from the late 50's through the late 60's we were in the pits after every race. The Indy Champ car drivers were regular people back then and I had a chance to meet and talk with many. Jim was always a crowd favorite at Trenton along with Eddie Sachs, Rodger Ward and an upstrart named A.J. something (I think it was Foyt...).

On two occasions, Jim accually let my brother and me sit in his car after the race (first an upright and later a roadster) and we thanked him by inviting him over to our house for swim in our pool to cool off. He never took us up on the swim, but he was a friendly guy always flashing that big smile. I remember his one hand had been badly burned and it had very limited mobility. Asking him about it (kids will be kids) he told us he had the doctors set his fingers that way so that he could still grip a steering wheel and continue to race. Great guy!
02/06/07 3-Wide Great story Keith.  Here's a link to another Hurtibise photo:

03/09/07 George Pavlisko As you know Jim's hands where burned very bad. At his request the doctors allowed his hands to heal so they could grip a steering wheel so he could still drive.   What the true heroes of the sport would not do so they could do what they loved.
