Comments: Crowd favorite, and one of the best sportsman drivers in the early 70's at Flemington and East Windsor (Garden State Champion), Joe Hall later became a track official at Flemington and really personified what Flemington was all about.  F - U - N.

Many will remember Joe giving the fist salute to his loyal fans who would stand on the top row of each of the bleacher sections and return the salute as a show of "We're with you Joe!"  With the wide side openings and Joe's 3/4 helmet, you could see his big grin in there as he looked up from inside the car saluting his fans.  In addition to his driving ability, Joe also was one of the first guys to buy a stack of photos from Ace Lane (big 8 X 10 black and white's) and gave them out to the kids in the pits after the races.

This little Corvair body with the square cage was the first car that I remember Joe in, but a few years later he had a Pinto bodied car and a Falcon bodied car and Joe really did get around.

In an interview at Motorsports 2008, Joe said that Fred Menschner helped out under the hood and Ray Neary helped out on the set up and Joe quickly found success.  He mentioned that he opened the 73 or 74 season off with a dominent win at Bridgeport and as soon as he pulled in the pits, Ray Neary said, "Why did you win by so much?... You should have backed it down a little so that the other guys don't know what you got.... Now they'll work harder and you'll have competition next week."  (Neary was right as Joe said that by the time the next week had come around, the competition had definitely stepped it up!)

Joe enjoyed racing against the best the sportsman had to offer and there's quite a few stories out there of some fun and games like the time he left a trophy of a horses ass on the seat of fellow sportsman competitor Ray Liss!  As Joe and Ray say about the 70's at Flemington... You raced each other hard, and sometimes you didn't win... but you always had fun, and that's something that's missing from today's racing...
