Very memorable car from and an even more memorable driver: Les Katona.
Whether deserved or not, to some, Les had a reputation as being one tough driver. But the thing that most remember is that Les will do down in history as one of the most winning Sportsman driver's in the 70's at East Windsor and Flemington. It may be argued that because of Les's success, Paul Kuhl put the "3 Win Rule" in effect around 1974 that forced any driver who had won a total of 3 sportsman events to move to the modified division the following season. I've even heard stories of guys who had 2 wins, intentionally sandbagging to a 2nd place finish in a feature so that they could keep their options open. Once Les hung up the helmet, he could be found helping out others who were still in quest of speed at his "Lawrence Engineering" business located in Trenton, NJ. Back when my son began racing Karts, Les and his team helped us get set up with a good helmet and a few odds and ends for the Kart. We also learned that when away from the track, Les is quite a big game hunter. |

Les had so much success in this car. Sort of simple looking but one of my all time favorite Sportsman cars! Thanks for all the memories Les!! |
