Comments: Comment from Fred: What would a Flemington Speedway photo retrospective be without Big Tom Hager? Tom was one of the most loyal drivers to the speedway. Tom was my favorite driver back when he was in the sportsman ranks. I can remember him driving many many cars at Flemington. How many can you name?

01/10/05 Mark Yaple Tom Hager was an owner first with Bing Metz & Larry Honey driving his Ford powerd 43's before taking over the wheel himself. I can remember Tom in the Al Sillman 4, The Ritter Klientop 666, Vern Garazzo's 21, the Alfrey/Carberry 47, Big Barry Schenck's A for one race which he won, and
the Union 76 sponsored mount.
12/04/05 Todd Lewis Tom has got to be one of the first drivers I ever saw with an afro
03/03/06 Brian My father, William Shepherd was a good friend of Tom Hager going way back to his dirt track days at Nazareth and Flemington Speedway. My fondest memories of childhood were the times when my brother and I would get to go into the pits after a feature win and see Tom pull up with the checkered flag, trophy, and a box of Tasty Cakes on top of his shiny blue #43!

My father actually helped on Tom's pit crew in the early days and Tom occasionally would drop by our house in Phillipsburg, NJ and say hello around the holidays. The man was a diehard, crafty driver. The race was never over even if Tom was in the middle of the pack. He would find a way to be right there at the end of the last lap! Thanks for developing this page! ~ Brian
09/24/06 tinythemodeler Is this the same driver that Marvin Panch's son Richie lived with for a while?  Richie was about 18 or 19 and just starting out as a driver. In interviews Marvin was very appreciative of the help & friendship given his son. Richie only drove a few Winston Cup races in the early '80's , before he was killed in a plane crash.
03/11/07 Jerry Pysher Back in the early 70's I lived next door to Tom and his family. He always impressed us with his ingenuity both in his stock cars and his tow vehicles. I remember him telling me how he got involved in driving, his comment was that he owned a Sportsman and kept watching it get crashed each week and he figured he could just as easily crash it himself. I believe in about 1976 he finally got some real sponsorship from a speed shop in New York. That season he tore up the tracks in NE Pa and Jersey. If memory serves me that year he ran the Number 76 instead of his more familiar 43.
