08.31.12 Lee Taylor

This was a horrendous crash. I witnessed it myself.

Jim had been at or near the front when coming off the fourth turn on the top of the track he found Don Stives driving the 81 Norcia race car.

Don was stuck in the top grove and with a flat and couldn't get down to the infield.  The 81 was mostly black when viewed from the back and Jim never saw him until it was way too late. The hit the back of the 81 so hard he somersaulted completely over the 81 and landed without the front suspension. Much as you see it in the picture. As I remember, no one was badly hurt but I know Jim had a bad back for a while.

A rule was passed that night: from then on, NO car would have a completely black or dark colored panel.

When I ran the Crazy Eddie black cars (81-84), we had the word INSANE in bright yellow across the back.

Thanks Joe.  Lee...
