06.23.12 3-Wide Interesting photo.  I always liked the blue coupe driven by Wilbur Force.  Also, not sure what was the last year that Elton raced, but this photo shows that he was still at it in the 70s.  Also, check out the "Space Rocket" in the infield which might have been part of the Joey Chitwood Thrill Show.
06.23.12 Jack Kromer A nice shot at Nazareth on a Sunday night. Two classic coupes of Force and Hildreth. I think Elton got hurt one year and that slowed him down on racing. Maybe that was 1970 or 71.  (I found a picture of Elton Hildreth in a plain red (not the usual black and orange) 16j at Nazareth in 1973. Maybe that was his last year.)

The thrill show always put people in the stands. I think we even memorized the lines from their show after watching it too many times. Like the "Sears sucker suit" line. They'd always ask the clown- "where did you get that suit?" Sears!
06.26.12 Hank Winecker I just had to comment on Wilbur Force.  There was a time when Wilbur was unbeatable in Flemington sportsman class.

I have etched in my memory the scene of his engine in the blue #8 being torn down at the north end of the grandstand when we were going home after visiting the pits after the races.

They ALWAYS tore him down trying to find out how he was so dominant.  Years later I asked Bruce Hooper, Wilbur's understudy and friend, how Wilbur was so fast yet ALWAYS legal.  Bruce said that Wilbur had one of the very first 302 chevy engines built.  It was a high revving engine and most racers didn't know of that engine yet.

Wilbur has a strong place in the history of Flemington speedway.
