Comments: | Rough night for the Piscopo #39 with Al Tasnady behind the wheel... Amazingly, Al was not seriously injured. |

04.25.11 | 3Wide | Check this out... I've got a June 14, 1967 AARN in front of
me, and a Bob Sweeten photo of the upside down #39 is on the cover. Under
the photo it says: "Al Tasnady #39 came to rest after a series of flips on
the backstretch at Reading. Tasnady was trapped in the car for about 5
minutes but had no serious injuries when released. The #39 is now being
rebuilt." Inside the paper, under the article about the race, it says: "...But as the field roared down the backstretch and into the third turn on the second lap, everyone was running flat out and all of a sudden popular Al Tasnady of Vineland, NJ found himself sailing through the air upside down and rolling over the top of Freddy Adam's car in the process. Tasnady took several real bad twists and turns as the Piscopo #39 bounced across the race track being hit by several cars as they went under him. The car finally came to rest upside down on the other side of the race track from where it all started and to the amazement of everyone, the likeable NJ star escaped with only a bad case of being shook-up. Tasnady regained himself and was interviewed over the public address system and told everyone about his wild ride. He also informed everyone that the fast moving #39 was a complete loss. Also involved in the accident were Lauden Potts and Shorty Kerschner but neither of these two boys were injured either." Above recap from June 14, 1976 Area Auto Racing News, by Barry Shultz |
04.25.11 | Red Schaeffer | Was this the first night out for this car? I was just a kid at the time, but thought it was a new car. |
04.29.11 | Dave Watts | If I am correct this was a Sunday night show. The thing I remember most was the long dead silence till Al emerged from the car. I also believe Dave Piscopo closed his body shop for the week and they built a new #39, which debuted the following Friday night. |
