11/30/06 Tom Gray I'm looking for information about a dirt gremlin 4-cylinder modified that I
raced in the tri-state area. The car was white and blue with red #27jr. It
was sold for $800 to a man in Delaware (August 1980) for his son to race and I heard that it was wrecked, possibly totaled, the first time out at one of
the Delaware tracks.

I had to sell this car to pay for my last year of college and would be interested in learning about the cars current condition, pictures and if possible I would like to acquire the car and restore it. The car was run with the American Mini Stock Association (AMSA), the only traveling mini stock series in the area back in the 70s-80s. The car had Mickey Mouse on one side and A-Treat Beverages on the rear deck lid. Please contact Tom Gray at  tgray58@hotmail.com .

11/11/06 Ray Brown Jr Howdy from Afghanistan where I am helping to win the war on terror. I am looking for information, photos, stories, etc of my Dad Ray Brown Sr. I was very young when my parents divorced and I rarely saw my Dad race after that.Since I was so young, I have very limited memories and almost no memorabilia from his career. He drove modifieds in the late 40's to late 50's before switching to midgets in the early 60's. I know one of the stocks he raced was #356 and the midgets were # 83 and #98. The midget association he belonged to was ARDC? My sister told me that his favorite track was the Orange County Fairground's Victory Speedway in Middletown, NY. He also had some sprint experience and I believe had a couple of rides in Indy Cars. I have a photo my Mom gave me that she wrote "Your first Indy Car Ride" Trenton NJ on. Does anybody remember watching my dad race or competing with him? I am trying to reconnect after all these years. Any information would be greatly appreciated and any photos will be cherished. 08/31/06 John Wanted: Any photo's or information on a 1930 Oakland Indy Racer built by the famous Ira Vail. The car, #38 was powered by an Oakland V8 and driven by Claude Burton. Qualifying in 16th position with an average speed of 95 mph. The car finished 11th averaging 82.9 mph. I am building a replica of this car from original parts and need photos other than those found at the Indy Speedway Library. My email is jarmst2@columbus.rr.com   Thank you.
08/30/06 Tom Smith I'm looking for photos of Hal Smith. He raced URC throughout the 1960's and also raced modifieds at Waterford Speedbowl in the early 1970's. He's 80 now and I would like to surprise him with some good memories. He was "famous" for being the last driver of Ted Horn's old sprint car, when he crashed it at Flemington in 1962. I know the car was restored to it's original condition years later. Anything would be great.  tom98micro@comcast.net
08/30/06 Craig I am looking for a picture of my dad Craig H. Snyder's Sportsman from the early 1960's. I believe he raced between 1961 and 1963. He told me that his car was a blue 1937 Ford Humpback Sedan. He ran the flathead V8. I believe he said the number 12 on the car was either yellow or gold? Most of his racing was done at Nazareth. He said he raced Harmony a couple of times. I guess that would have had to be 1963. I do know my Dad would talk about when he flat towed his car up to Syracuse NY once. My Dad did say he ran Flemington once or twice. My Dad said they were NASCAR at the time. He didn't like the rules NASCAR had at Flemington.

My Dad did run Gary Philips 11x in 1973 at Nazareth. I remember sitting in that car. I never had a chance to see him race though. I was only seven and my Mom and Dad were getting a divorce. There was no one to take me to see my Dad race. If you have any Pictures of this car I would appreciate one of those too. The 11x was red, white and blue.

My Dad said he ran Dorney park once. He didn't like it though. My Dad called Dorney bumping cars. My Dad liked the dirt much better.   When my Dad took me to Nazareth as a kid, we always sat in the 4th turn. My Dad liked to watch the cars drift through the turn. After Nazareth shut down and my Dad would go to Grandview, we would sit near turn one.

Thank You,
Craig C. Snyder  efdpro@rcn.com
08/24/06 Bruce Thomas I am hoping that someone out there might have some pics of my uncles car from the 50's 60's or 70's they ran Reading mostly and Langhorne, but did travel to other tracks also. 7/25/06 Bill K I figure this is a long shot, but I just picked up a car that we believe raced primarily at the Little Falls (NY) speedway in the late 50's - it also could have run Fonda, Brookfield, Utica-Rome, or Columbia. My friend also bought one that would have run the same places. Both are said to have been built by Bob Smith for his sons to run, but he took them back afraid they'd get killed and parked them.

39chevycpemod3.jpg (46252 bytes)
My car is somewhat unusual and might be able to be picked out of a photo -1939 Chevy coupe on stock frame, uses part of a split rim in the radiator guard, has rub rails made from the stock Chevy bumpers, and it ran with the taillights still on the back complete with lenses. It has trimmed backfenders on it yet. It also got sideways at some point and has a fairly obvious dent in the left edge of the roof. The car had white sides and mayhave had a dark blue top - or it may have been light blue - or all three, it's hard to tell if the light blue color is the original paint and a lot of the paint is just plain gone. The car number appears to have been 45 or 48, in red in an angled style similar to the style used on the tan #61 cars Steve Danish ran at Fonda, but smaller sized.

The car has some other features I thought were odd, but I need to look the car over better to sort out what there is. Best guess is it ran between 1955 and 1960 - it still has a windshield in it, but the trans appears to be 55-57 Chevy. No other drivetrain came with the car. The cage in it isn't bad and the welding is first rate, it looks to have been a pretty well built piece for it's time, but wether that translates to running well or winning who knows.

I'm hoping to find some pictures that show this car when it was racing, to try to sort out what it looked like or how it was painted, also to show how the hood was cut since it's missing or else buried in the brush where the car was. I'm not sure what I want to do with it just yet, but having some more information would be a help.

Here's a picture of the Ford:

07/17/06 Jeff Matthews I have been seeking any pictures of the Norcia 81 that Sammy Beavers drove at flemington back in the 80's where they had raised the roof really high and did some body work that was wild in order to make them change the body rules that had gotten out of hand. I think they only ran the car 1 night as it was outlawed, and on that night Sammy won with it. Does anyone have
any pictures of this specific car? (email us here at the Vault if you can help at:   3wide@optonline.net )

07/04/06 Allen Clark I purchased this car (click on the link below) from a gentleman near the Weedsport, NY area that was going to try and race it as a Sportsman. He purchased the car with a Gremlin style body, removed it, and had a new, more current body built for the car. He never did race the car and I purchased it complete with everything but an engine. He was told it was possibly a mid to late 80's Champ Car (possibly Show Car?). If anyone can please tell me for sure what this chassis is for sure, I would greatly appreciate it. I have plans to put a Falcon body on and hopefully race it with a vintage club in
the northeast.

06/29/06 Greg C! I am looking for photos of Nino Marcello in the Rich De Virgilio, Light Blue, Yellow and White number 12 coupe. The year would be 1978 - 80 [OCFS]. The coupe body was actually from a Mike Muchoe car out of Closter, NJ. Rich built the car from pieces he gathered from the racing fraternity, actually doing a super job. The car was extremely competitive for around 12 laps and then it went away, too much right rear! Anyway Nino and Rich are good friends and we are planning a photo party this summer and I thought it might be nice to have a couple of shots that they have never seen before. Stills, partials anything would be nice Nino has fallen on some hard timed these past couple of years,  Greg C! - peakracingequip@charter.net   <

05/06/07 Jan Games Does anyone recognize this '37 Chevy humpback coach?

http://www.world-of-fords.org/ChevsideSM.jpg

I just purchased this modified from Gary Byerly, the president of the Midstate Vintage Club in NY. He obtained this car in a trade and the only info he has is that it was raced in Pennsylvania. This coach has a rather unique 3 link rear suspension which leads me to believe that she may have raced on asphalt sometime in the past. When I bring her home to Ohio in a week or so, I can send better and more detailed photos to anyone who thinks
that they may recognize her.

Any tidbit of information as to her heritage would be greatly appreciated! Even though he never ran a Chevy coach, I'll be racing her with Gerald Chamberlain's color, #76 and Ford power.

Thanks!  Jan Games  galaxiejan@neo.rr.com

02/26/06 John Rennard Looking for pictures of Sanatoga and Municipal Stadium in PA:
In the 40s and 50s my Grandfather owned two race cars that ran at Sanatoga and a few other local raceways.  They called their team "Sad Sacks", my grandfather's name was Lawrence Farrell Sr., the car numbers were 18 and 41.
My grandfather died several years ago as did my grandmother and my mother and uncle, I have one uncle that remains alive but he is so busy getting with him is like pulling teeth, so the memories have sorta fallen along the wayside.
All the pictures save for maybe 2 or 3 I have found have long since "mysteriously" disappeared and I am looking for pictures of these cars in action at Sanatoga or even Municipal Stadium.
The only driver name that stands out is, Moore and I am not sure of the first name but for some reason the names Mose and Harry stick out in my mind.
I do remember my mother talking about a grudge match between this driver and Red Lescher at Sanatoga and her and my uncle getting in a huge fight since he was cheering for the guy that drove my grandfather's car and saying he was the best driver at Sanatoga and my mother was cheering for Red Lescher and when Red actually beat Gradnpa's driver my mother smacked my uncle and accidentally knocked him off the bleachers.

Any help finding these pictures and maybe some one helping me contact the drivers of the old 18 and 41 Sad Sacks Racing cars that were based in West Chester, PA. I would give my right arm for the chance to speak with the drivers if they are still alive...it would really make my dream come true.
John Rennard now residing in Gap, PA

02/17/06 Matt Cranstoun I was hoping I could find some help in locating ANY images, video, or articles that may mention my father. It's an idea I had for Father's Day... His name is Doug Cranstoun. I believe the name on his car may have been Bruno Cranstoun or Duggy Bruno Cranstoun. He drove an all yellow with red frame coupe (that was Ken Brenn's at one point) in big blocks at East Windsor from 76 through 80, I think. The years I'm mostly interested in are, I think, 79 and 80, maybe even 78 too. The car number then was #1, it was originally #88 as pictured in The 70's Vault here on page 44, with Horton. Articles in PDI or Area Auto Racing News (I've been told Area Auto did the programs these years), or pictures, or video...or anything, please let me know. I'd love to surprise him with some sort of artifact. mcranstoun@paragonsports.com

02/06/06 Pappysplace I'm looking for any photos, programs or articles, related to Mason-Dixon Speedway and Lancaster Speedway, both tracks were located in south eastern Pa. My father drove at these tracks from 1949 to 1953. My fathers name was Jerry Snelbaker. The cars were always 34 ford coupes, number 75, the colors were either maroon, powder blue or white.

I was only ten years old at the time, but have many fond memories of those
days. I have some pictures and can put names to them, but others I could use a program or something to help put names to the numbers on the cars. Any help would be appreciated. pappysplace5@cs.com

11/18/05 Kenneth E Cleveland My father, George Cleveland is restoring an old '37 Ford Coach. In the late 80s the car was restored by Buddy Krebs to look like one of his old cars, and was raced a several early NEAR events. My father spoke to Buddy Krebs several times and found out that the car was originally driven by Hal and Matt McCarty #79, and was raced in Danbury, Middletown, Lebanon Valley and several other NY tracks in the late 50s. I guess they started racing the car elsewhere when Danbury closed down for several years in the late 50s. If you have any information/pictures, or know anybody that does have some info, it would be greatly appreciated. I attached the one photo we have to the original car. Thanks, Ken Cleveland

11/01/05 Monet Samuelson Hello Gentlemen, my name is Monet Samuelson. I live in North Carolina. I'm not old enough to remember your racing days at Hatfield (I'm only 26), but I have heard my father speak very highly of his racing days at that track. His name is Powell Calloway. He drove the blue #99 car back in the late 50's, early 60's I believe.

I was hoping that some of you may be able to help me with a little project I am working on as a Christmas gift to my father. He often talks about a very bad accident he was in in 1961. This accident left him in a coma for days. I was hoping one of you might know how I may get my hands on the article that was printed in the local paper about his accident. I would like to have it (and any pictures of the car or my Dad) framed for him for Christmas. You see my mother recently passed away and he just hasn't been himself lately.

I'm hoping this unique gift idea might cheer him up. Also, if any of you happen to have been friends with my father I was wondering if you might write him a short letter recalling memories you may have of those racing days at Hatfield. Please contact me at the email address below if you would be willing to help out, or you can send information to the following address. Thank you so much and I hope to hear from you soon!  monetcalloway@yahoo.com

07/18/05 Rick " The Bear " Herbert Although the drivers I am looking for are not from the tracks in your area, I am hoping some old timers from my area might surf into your site.

The following drivers were all from my old home town, Vanderbilt, PA.
Jim Danner ( deceased ), Bill Dull ( deceased ), and Tom Bennett # 88 Ground Pounder ( deceased )

They all started to race in the fifties, first coupes, then late models..... but I remember first seeing them in the mid sixties at the old Motordrome in Ruffsdale, PA and at other tracks in the PA area.....  Bedford, Smuckers, Lernerville, Marion Center, Jennerstown, Heidleburg and Morgantown, WV.
They all drove for years..... into the early seventies.

Vanderbilt is celebrating their 100 year anniversary in August and I'm writing a " Do You Remember " book.   I looking for old photos of these drivers to include in the book.

Thanks for your help.  Rick " The Bear " Herbert

07/17/05 Gill I am looking for photos of my father's dirt track cars from 1966 - 1974. His first was a '50-51Chevy, "X-100" Limited Sportsman, the rest were all "9". From 1967 to 1970 we raced limited graduating to modifieds around the '71 season. We raced mostly at Nazareth Speedway and later both Nazareth and Middletown Fairgrounds with a few trips to Flemington and Reading. Ed Farley drove the last car, the Stroud Ford #9 Maverick, for two seasons and another driver took his place whose name I cannot remember. All cars were Royal Blue, or some shade close to that and the numbers and lettering were pale yellow or white.

My father's entire stack of scrap-books, dating back to 1966, were destroyed in a plant fire in his office in Florida. We have no photos of his designs we raced those several years. I would love to be able to acquire some photos, or scans on photos to frame as a part of my family's "Heritage Wall". Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail me at m.gilliland@erols.com .

07/04/05 Denny Hudock I am the chairman of the Lorain Speedway (OH) Hall of Fame and have been trying to get into touch with Armond Holley or Armond, Jr. to inform them that Armond has been named to our Hall of Fame and I want to get some information to him. Any help would be appreciated.

Originally from Alabama, Armone Holley was a supermodified driver of star quality. He was recruited by Bill Port of Cleveland, OH to drive Port's Bill Hite Reae-engined FWD supermodified back in the 70s. The car and Holley were absolutely unbeatable. At Lorain County, they used to start him on the pole, one lap down, to give the other guys a chance. He still won. Armond later ran supermodifieds in the East, around MA, VT, and NY. Again he was a big winner. He moved back to Alabame, but recently returned to New England.

Thanks -  Denny Hudock  dennyhudock@wowway.com

06/29/05 Rick Allen O. Wertz was like a father to me.  I know he raced flatheads at Reading Fairgrounds because the website shows he won a couple of races, & I'm not sure if he raced anywhere else, I was too young to remember any more then.

He used to have a racecar at his house at times. Because he loved racing so much, he always hung around Williams Grove, Selinsgrove, Hagerstown, Penn National and was good friends with Jack Gunn & anyone around the tracks.   And he died doing what he loved most - being at the races (Selinsgrove).

I received an email from someone saying that Al drove in the flathead division and his car number was #4 owned by John Dissler & was teammate with George Specht.

Anyone with any info or know of these other people or how I might get in touch with them, PLEASE email me at FreeRider2@hotmail.com
06/27/05 Robert Makosky I have two request for people who may have photos. My father Bob Blough who raced a MAD and Modified car at Wall in the early and Mid 80's then switched to dirt in the 90's at Bridgeport. while at Wall he ran a blue Gremlin #21 and a white troyer Cavelier #21.   Then at bridgeport he ran The 00 South Jersey Overhead door car (Sal was a big help and good friend to my dad).  He ran in the Sportsman class and then moved up to Mod's and didn't do half bad still running a small block (358) car.

New Info:  I was talking to my dad(Bob Blough) about his blue #21 gremlin that i have been looking for pictures of. It seems that the car he drove at #Wall speedway is the same car Tony Siscone drove at Pleasantville Speedway for Sal Dabruno and was the Track Record holder there until the day it closed. So i hope this extra info helps find some pics of this car.

Thanks again Rob

If anybody has any pics of these cars i whould love to see them again.   thephakingone@yahoo.com

03/02/05 Jeffrey A. Slayton I am hoping that someone can help me.   My name is Jeff Slayton, the grandson of the late Tiny Slayton.  I have been trying to compile pictures and information regarding my grandfathers career in auto racing up until his untimely death in December 1976.
His racing teams won several modified championships early on.  Johnny Roberts drove the Night Crawler's race team car.   He also owned the LMS #19 which ran all along the east coast with Tommy Ellis, Joe Thurman, Ray Fanning and the #9 driven by Joe Westerman. The last driver I remember driving for him was Joe Thurman out of Rocky Mount, VA.
So far the task has produced little to no results. A google search produced pictures of an actual model built by Jim Brewer of my grandfathers old #7.
I thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Jeff Slayton

The car was Leffler's house car in 1972and ran as a dark blue #2 "Dunseth Chevy" and was driven in USAC competition by Larry Dickson and Tom Bigelow.  After 1972 and until it was purchased by Ulrich it's history is uncertain.   I am hoping someone associated with Charlie Ulrich may be able to tell me at least the color and number of the car when he purchased it.

Please e-mail Doug Post at  DVO83@aol.com
Regards, Doug Post

Thanks - Rob Terry    terr2874@bellsouth.net
01/09/05 Rod McLeod I am researching the Rutledge Rocket Corvair modified that made its debut at the 1967 Lancaster Run What Ya Brung race. It was initially driven by the Rutledge Rocket Supermodified driver Warren Coniam but the following year was driven by John Clapham and also perhaps by John Spencer.
The car was blue with a full body and the number 46 on the rear quarters. On the door was a graphic of a girl on a rocket similar to what you might see on a fighter plane.
Any help would be most appreciated. I want to build a model of this
car for our club project on the Corvair.
Thanks, Rod McLeod (Statsman)  rsmcleod@gmail.com

10/17/04 R Wassner I am looking for any pictures or info on Monroe County Fairgrounds Racetrack. The track is in Monroe county new York and ran from 1950 to 1959 Nascar Grand National series and also ran a dirt series after that. Dutch Hoag, Will Cagle, Jack Murphy, Bill Wimble, Kenny Meahl and Roy Campbell are some of the drivers that ran on this track. There is very little info on the net and I have not gotten very far with any locals in Henrietta (NY).

Right now there is a threat of a grocery store buying the property and ripping up this historic track to build a store. I wish there were a way to stop them and resurrect this historic track. I have heard from a lot of local people that this track was excellent to run on.

Wouldn't it be great to resurrect this old track before it is totally forgotten?

Thanks, R Wassner  rwassner@rochester.rr.com
