...Another great opportunity to here stories that you've never heard before... and to find out the real deal on stories that maybe you've only heard bits and pieces of.  The folks that attended the May FSHS meeting were enjoyed a unique opportunity to meet Larry and Newt, two of their favorite Flemington drivers who we've all enjoyed watching since the mid 70's.  It was an outstanding evening.

Larry answered questions about his early years in racing..., why he chose the Pink Panther theme... the photo finish he had with Frank Cozze... driving for Barry Schenck.... winning the Modified Point championship and then finding out a few weeks before the start of the new season that he would not be driving the car...Larry also talked about his favorite guys to race against (had respect for all) and a few that ran him harder than he would have preferred.  Larry talked about running sprints and that he felt he probably should have spent more time running them.

Newt talked about how he got started by buying a car and a motor from Sammy Beavers before he even had a garage to keep it in... About how he was confident that he could drive... and then the first time he saw the green at Flemington, that guys went by him so fast.... he knew he had his work cut out!  (But as you know, that didn't last for very long!)  Newt talked about how originally is #24 was because of Will Cagle, but later in his career he switched to #026 because it was a # that Jackie McLaughlin ran.  He talked about preferring a small block (even a big small block) that it allowed him to keep his foot in it more...  He also talked about running and winning in the George Unfried #1 Mini-Stock... and that's just the tip of the iceberg....

For those that were there, they know that's only a small sample of what was discussed.  Great to hear the history from those that created it!
Thanks you Larry Kline and Newt Hartman for taking time to chat with the FSHS members tonight.  Thanks also to John McCaughey and the officers of the FSHS for coordinating tonight's guest speaker session.

Lots of great stories... from the dirt days (pre 91) to the asphalt days (91 - closing) all from the perspective of the guy standing on the platform with the sticks in hand!  Thanks again to Warren, Scott and Bobby for sharing their experiences with the members and guests at the FSHS Meeting.

Artist/Lettering Specialists Dennis Smith and Rick Shive Share Stories at The Flemington Speedway Historical Society Meeting (FSHS)

Artist/Letterer's Dennis Smith and Rick Shive share a few stories and a few laughs at The Flemington Speedway Historical Society Meeting

When you think of your favorite racecars throughout the years, what was it about the car that you remember?  Sure, the shape of the car, the color of the car... but if you are like me, I think you'll agree that a big part of "the look" was the "lettering" including the colors, style and the all important "#".   To me, the crew chief made it run... but the letterer brought it to life!

The attendees of the Flemington Speedway Historical Society (FSHS) Meeting on Tuesday, March 6th had a real treat as Artist/Racecar Lettering Specialists Dennis Smith and Rick Shive keep the crowd smiling all night long with stories relating to the art of lettering a racecar...  They spoke about some of their favorites through the years, some of the "personalities" of the sport, some of the "challenges", the pro's and con's of using paint and/or vinyl... and about some "unique" occurrences such as bringing their paint, brushes and yardstick along to the racers to take care of some "very last minute requests!"

Both Dennis and Rick brought along a few photo books featuring some of the cars they've lettered over the years, along with the stories to go along with each....

It was a great night and the crowd on hand was buzzing afterwards with compliments of how entertaining and enjoyable the evening was.  Huge thanks go out to both Dennis and Rick on taking time out of their busy time of the year to be the featured guest speakers for the FSHS gathering.   Thanks again guys!
