Comments: Comment:  I"ve been reading the "Modifieds of The Valley - The History of Lebanon Valley Speedway" and learned how Mert got the nickname of "Socks."  Author Lew Boyd tells it better than this, but here's a loose description:  Mert had been driving with big work boots and didn't have a good feel for the gas pedal, so one night he climbed into the car with a work boot on his left foot, and nothing but a sock on his right foot (gas pedal foot) so he could have a better feel/more control of the throttle. Well, it worked, and when he climbed out of the car that night in victory lane wearing only a sock on his right foot, the nickname was given.

For more great stories of Lebanon Valley stories, you can find the book at the Coastal 101 website:  http://www.coastal181.com/
