They always assigned race numbers at Langhorne since there were so many different
cars from different tracks and sanctioning bodies. They always had lots of duplicate
numbers. Generally, the car that registered first got to use the number on the car
in the race, so if this is 1968 it looks like the Wright/Zautner team (from the other pic)
got to use #24 and Will had to change his to #14. I think this is the same car that
Will won Langhorne with in 1966. |

correct, my apologies. Shot my mouth off too quickly!! (Which isn't new!)
The rest of my comment isn't exactly correct either. I think I may be right
with respect to the very early National Opens at Langhorne, but in the later events
numbers were determined by time trial. So if there were two #24 cars, the one that
timed faster got to keep the number. There may have been other ways they assigned
car numbers but those are the only two that I am aware of. Thanks! Jim Brewer |

aren't necessary. Hey when you think about it, it's pretty amazing that we can
remember this stuff at the level we all do since it happenned some 30, 40 or sometimes 50+
years ago! I was born in 1960 and try to remember everything first hand as I don't
have time to read old programs and statistics... that's why I'm usually pretty quite
about stuff that happenned before 1970! |
