12/24/04 | Dave Blake | Could that be Zorro Engler who ran at Dorney Park some years ago? I believe he sometimes traveled to other tracks Hope this helps, Dave |
12/24/04 | Ned Stites III | I'm not sure, but I seem to think "Zorro" is Zorro Engler. |
12/27/04 | Warren Urffer | Zorro Engler was one of many Dorney Park drivers who also raced at Nazareth, particularly through the 1960s and 1970s. Del Hahn, George Wambold, Jim Kemmerer, Tim Parry, Roger Heffelfinger and others had success at both tracks. |
12/27/04 | Warren Wetzel | The #29 Is Zorro Engler at Nazareth around 1968. I saw Zorro Engler
for the first time at the Mountainview Speedway north of Nazareth around 1961. He actually
wore a black outfit complete with cape! He drove a '37 Ford sedan painted black with a white Z on it. He was quite competitve and also ran Nazareth, Mahoning Valley and Dorney Park. The Z car is at the bottom of a quarry some where up in Wind Gap, PA. His real name was Rod (I forget the last name). He worked for a company that did business with the place that my wife worked at. He had to use the false name because of his job. Keep up the great job, Warren |
12/28/04 | Bob Hummer Sr. | Actually Zorro was a name He liked because of the Popular "then at
the time" Zorro on television. He was a car salesman at one time for the Ford garage
that at that time sponsored Him "Lane Ford", Phillipsburg,N.J. I don't remember
His real name. I do know the car was built and owned by Art Vargo of Kesserville Road
Easton,Pa. where They kept the car. I dropped in a couple of times to admire the car. Art
was previously on the Harold Cope #1 Modified crew of Rags Carter and the Pappy Matlock
crew of the #40 modified that Harry Charles ran at Nazareth. This photo of the metallic
blue and white modified was in 1968 or 1969. I have been told by reliable sources
repeately in the past that Zorro Engler was the driver that Butch Tittle always liked and
this is how Butch got the Z identity that is still actively competitive. I remember
the car was ford powered as well. Bob Hummer Sr. |
08/19/05 | Bergstresser | I haven't thought of Zorro Engler in 35 years until I read this. Zorro stole the show from the race winner many of Saturday nights at Dorney Park. He was a strong runner and all the kids loved him. As I remember Zorro was one of the best at Dorney although he couldn't match the talent that was running at Nazareth. I saw Jim Kemmerer's name mention in one of the comments as a driver who would ran both Dorney and Nazareth. Jim lived next door to us when I was a kid. He also was a strong runner at both tracks and always had time to wave to me from the car before a race would start. |
05/11/06 | John Ricker | Zorro's real name was Rodney Nolf.As far as Zorro not being competitive at
Nazareth, you might want to ask Wayne Young about that because if my memory serves me
right I believe Zorro and Wayne had a season long battle for the Limited Sportsman track
championshipat Nazareth Speedway in early 60's ! From : John Ricker Nazareth , PA |
04.04.09 | Carl Varga | That seems to be the Nazareth speedway. The car was owned and built by Arthur Varga. At the time, he lived in Easton, Forks township, on Frost hollow road. The car was his hobby but took most of his time not to mention his paycheck. Art has since passed away but the memories remain of the cars he built and raced at many of the area tracks. |
