I remember Al Gaspari (and Lindy? his brother I think), driving a road grader all around this old dirt track! I even stood on this track at this very turn #3 during a race red flag at times while riding in my uncle's jeep push car when I was around 17 or 18 (in the mid 70's). My family had a boating dealership and I remember Kenny Brightbill coming up the river and buying a really high performance boat from my grandfather.

This is actually the turn off to pit road just before turn #3. Also, I see in one of the other posts and remember now it was Lindy Vacari and frequently even Al Gaspari himself driving the grater.

I had the privilege of riding along with Lindy, in the cab of the grader, as he prepped the track for a Friday night's race.  Hal Browning and I were walking along the front stretch and Lindy stopped the grader to ask Hal a question.  Once the question was answered, Lindy asked Hal if he wanted to ride along.  Hal told Lindy he had some things to do on the racecar but since I traveled all the way from northern VA, every Friday and Sunday, that I deserved to ride along.  Lindy waved me up and we were on our way.  Lindy was very interested in why I traveled that far to see a race and I told him that "old habits were hard to break."  I passed numerous racetracks in the 3 hour ride north but there was absolutely no racing like there was at the Fairgrounds.  I had been going to races at Reading for 10 years already and I wasn't about to quit just because I was 3 hours away.  (Ain't youth wonderful??)

Anyway, I got an education that evening, that I can guess not too many people were ever able to experience.  A memory that will last a lifetime.

I remember one spring the track was not up to par for opening day--in fact not raceable -- My dad wrote Lindy a letter about his disappointment -- Lindy replied, that he believed in his track and apologized for the spring ruts with three free tickets for next time!

Lindy was a great businessman!

If someone could get this message to Chick, I was wondering if you used to run a car called Chick n Coop at Nazareth and if you remember a driver named Al Fulleman.  I believe you went to Spring Garden Institute Trade School With Him, I used to crew for him, me e- mail is drkhorse5@verizon.net
