Asphalt or Dirt, It Didn't Matter

If I have sent this photo into the Vault somewhere on a previous occasion, sorry, but it's one of my favorites! One good things about Senior Moments are they can reoccur.

Here is Irv Fried, co-promoter of the Langhorne Speedway presenting a qualifying bowl to Frankie Schneider at Vineland Speedway on September 4, 1959.

Like many of us, I remember Frankie's achievements at Nazareth, Middletown and other dirt tracks he raced.  This picture always reminds me of his skills as an asphalt track racer.

The Vineland Speedway operated as a dirt track for 3 seasons before being paved for the 1958 opener.  Frankie ran at regularly during the 1958 and '59 season.  In '58 he was the top feature winner with 6 in the modifieds and 1 in the late models.  In 1959 he returned to be the top feature winner taking 9 events.  To eliminate any thoughts of "cherry pick'n", he beat out Norm Kidd in the XL-1, Pete Frazee in the 41, (South Jersey's) Bill Wilson in the Pontiac 5 and Elton Hildreth in the 16-J, the night he won the qualifier's bowl!

Signs of the (them there) Times:

  • Fire suite?

  • I build, maintain and drive my own equipment!

  • I earn a living at doing this!

  • Front Tire? It's done after this race but, it lasted long enough to win!

  • Front Spring? Maybe wrapped to keep the "leaf counters" curious?

Check the photo out closely. How many things are so interesting but or no particular reason. Even the rear view mirror!

Sorry, deep in my Moment!

12.10.09 Neil Yarrington I remember these two guys stopping off at every town that had a race track from Danville, VA. to Lynchburg to Waynesboro to Stauton to Ruckersville to Zions Crossroads on to Centerville over to Manassas and then up to Winchester.   They won a feature at each track.
