Run What You Brung....Langhorne Style

Langhorne Speedway ran several combined shows where different divisions of race cars ran on the same program. Langhorne's Inquirer Meet in the early 50's was an example with the program featuring midgets, sprints and stock cars racing in feature events. On May 17, 1959 Langhorne presented a "Round Robin" 200 lap program. The show consisted of a 33 lap Sports Car heat, a 33 lap Late Model heat and a 34 lap Sportsman Stock Car heat. The top 15 from each heat would make the 45 starters in the 100 lap feature made of the mix of all three divisions.

Photo 1 shows a selection of all three types of race cars at the event. The maroon and white number 1 is Jackie McLaughlin. Photo 2 shows feature pole starter Johnny Dodd Jr.'s 1959 Ford number 72 and Loyal Katskee in the number 12. Don Stumpf's sportsman 2 started 3rd. Stumpf won the sportsman qualifier with Jack Rudy second and Bob Malzahn third. Carroll Shelby won the sports car heat followed by Loyal Katskee and Howie Brown. Johnny Dodd Jr. won the late model qualifier followed by Frankie Schneider and Wally Dallenbach.

The feature event was won by Johnny Dodd Jr. followed by Frankie Schneider, Bob Malzahn, Buck Hall and Bob Duell fifth.

Johnny Dodd Jr. and Frankie Schneider were the class of the field finishing one-two in their qualifier and the feature event. This "Round Robin" format was not used again as far as I know. Grandstand seats went for $3,4 and 5.00! $2.00 for general admission to the infield!

Thanks to Ed Duncan for sharing this moment with statistics from that "mixed" up day.

12.15.09 3Wide We originally had Carroll Shelby in the #12, but have since received updated info that is now reflected above.
12.15.09 Michael T. Lynch The #12 is Loyal Katskee's Ferrari 121 LM (6C 4.4-liter). I believe Shelby drove a Cadillac Special, not in the picture.  That is how NSSN described his ride. The format was that there were three races for sports cars, modifieds and stockers. The fastest from each category ran in the Main.
12.15.09 3Wide Thanks for the info Michael.  Russ had sent just sent us an update that as you had mentioned above of  Katskee being the driver of the #12 Ferrari, and not Carroll Shelby.   He added that Shelby lost oil pressure in his car and could not start the feature.
12.15.09 Steve Elias On this "latest senior moment",  I was there that day running a 57 Plymouth in the late model division.  I was running third behind Dodd and Schneider in the 33 lap qualifier and blew a piston that ended my day.

Tas had driven that same Plymouth in NASCAR Grand National in 57 and 58 for Romeo Gelsi who sold the car at the end of 58.
12.15.09 3Wide Thanks Steve - What do you remember most about running at Langhorne?  I know the track was dirt up until the late 60's, and it looks like they oiled it down to keep down the dust.  Did you drive the car like if it was asphalt, or did it still want to slide (fishtail) on the dirt surface?
12.15.09 Michael Does the person where these came from have any further pics?  I keep Shel's race record for him and have never been able to find a pic of the Cadillac special.
12.16.09 Larry Jendras Jr. Micheal, If you go to the recent book out about Langhorne by L. Spencer Riggs, there is a great photo of the Cadillac Special of Carroll Shelby racing with the #12 of Katskee.  The photo (in the book) was taken by Pennsylvania photographer Ray Masser.
12.18.09 Ray Shea We will have the original Cadillac Special at Motorsports as part of the Langhorne display presented by the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club.  Looking for any more info on this car.

Here's what the car looks like now (Dec 2009)
