Senior Moment From Larry
Jendras Jr: One of the most recognizable numbers in all of Modified-Sportsman racing was the Fireball 99. The white 1934 Ford coupe shown in the photo might be one of the earliest examples of that famed number and its driver Bob Malzahn. It was taken at Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, Va. in 1954. Bob was still living in Florida and along with the 97 team of Tommie Elliott and Jack Chocquette, came north to terrorize some of the local tracks. I have found documentation of Bob racing at Old Dominion, Cockade City and Mooers Field in Virginia, Delmar in Delaware and Lanham in Maryland during that year. In a few years, Bob became a fixture in Northeast Modified racing along with a large group of Florida tranplants. |
