Comments: Senior Moment From Larry Jendras Jr:

New Jersey and Delaware race fans will remember the combination of Maryland's Ralph Smith and the Putty Hill Speed Shop #88 of George Heffner from their years at Alcyon, Vineland, Delmar and Georgetown. But before they became fixtures at these tracks, they were regulars of the Free State Stock Car Racing Association based at the Maryland area tracks such as Dorsey, Ritchie, Hagerstown and just over the line in Pa. at Mason Dixon Speedway.

Ralph was the 1954 and 1955 Free State champion with George being the club president in 1954.

The photo of the freshly painted #88 was taken at the 1955 Baltimore Auto Show. In the background is the display of the Free State group showing trophies and racing action in the many photos.

Ralph and George had a memorable 1955 as they dominated the listed tracks and by seasons end, built a 1934 Ford coupe #88 that they took to the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, N.Y. After battle with Irish Jack Murphy and Ciff Kotary for the lead, Ralph and George brought the big Labor Day win back to Maryland.
