From a track somewhere in Texas perhaps, this great photo could be labeled “before A.J. became A.J.” Driver Billy Wade can be seen removing his helmet after crashing the 53 car, owned by Anthony “Tony” Foyt Sr.

Wouldn’t a vintage car owner today love to have this 1937 Chevy coupe! Still with the grill! Note the hood openings and the GMC emblem attached to the rear of the right side hood panel.

Doesn’t it bring back memories of Tom Skinner?

Yes, that is A.J. standing to the right of Billy, too young to drive!

06/05/08 Larry "RETrott" Trotter It appears to be the turn one/turn two area of Playland Park Spdwy/Houston.  This scene is also pictured from another angle in another post about Houston Auto Racing on the TXSZ site.  FYI, Playland Spdwy/Houston was behind and on the east end of Playland Amusement Park.  The Amusement Park main entrance was on the SE corner of 9201 South Main.  The spdwy was a short distance west of the current location of Reliant Football Stadium.

Correctly, A J Foyt Jr is just to Billy Wade's right, but he may have been racing by then. I believe he started in 1953, and that's close to the time frame of the picture. Whether or not the car was owned by A J "Tony" Foyt Sr, I don't know, and would be inclined to believe it was owned by Archie Lacy, and wrenched by Tony. But, really just a guess on my part. A great and significant historic picture.

Best Regards,
Larry "RETrott" Trotter
01.17.09 4PROP RETrott is correct. The car was owned by Archie Lacy and wrenched by Tony Foyt.
