From Russ:

Bob Pickell, #300 and Flemington, New Jersey

Developing a driver / cars collages is a lot of fun. Collecting the photos and talking with the driver, when possible, is worth the price of admission, so to speak. Bob Pickell and son Bob Jr., were very informative as I shared some of my Senior Moments with them, while viewing their photo albums.

My remembrances of Bob started at Flemington when he was driving his own 300, 1937 Ford sedan. His first cars however were numbered 77 and from some of the photos in his album, he had some upside down “learning experiences” at the beginning. His next rides carried the letter X. It was then that he talked with his wife and decided he wanted to use the number 300. Jackie McLaughlin had used that number in winning his 1956-57 championships at Flemington, so out of respect to Jackie he chose the number. Besides that, he just liked the number 300. What a choice! Regardless of all the success while driving for various car owners, Bob Pickell’s name became synonymous with the number.

Also synonymous with Bob Pickell’s name is his home town, Flemington. It was always announced along with his number!

As you view this collage, here are some of the cars included.

1. The Fred Brian A2A which carried Bob to his very first feature win.
2. The Lucky Jordan “Deuces” coupe and sedan, which Bob drove to
19 feature wins between 1964 and 1966.
3. The Loren Holland 280, driven to a Reading win.
4. The Cozze #80 NASCAR Grand Nation Chevy driven at Daytona
5. The Cozzie # 80 and 44, modifieds
6. Feature winning cars driven by Bob for Paul Deasey, Bill
McConnell, Jim Horton and Lou Inzeo.
7. The famous “CAT” hauler!

02.08.09 Ed Duncan Russ, another great job
02.09.09 Roger McCloughan Bob owned his own auto glass and upholstery business in Flemington, which was probably why the famous "leopard-skin" vinyl top was on the tilt-up #300 Sedan. He was also a Flemington High School graduate.
02.09.09 BaybreezeFarm Flip top, very nice car.  love those sedans.  brightbill at reading, great memories
06.13.09 Stan Walulik If I may, Russ:
The "X" cars were owned by Fred Gearhart of C & G Herefords, Oldwick, NJ. Those cars were Cadillac powered Chevy's, frequently sponsored by Bush Dairy Farms.  I spent MANY nights watching Fred build and maintain those cars and helping on occasion, mostly by fetching tools. Fred was an absolute master fabricator.

He also fielded 2 Daytona cars between '61 & '63. Olds, then 409 Chevy powered Studebaker Hawks, (factory fins). Les Farley drove those 2 during speed week.

Your commentary is the best. Always informative, and ALWAYS accurate.
