Still one of the best views in auto racing was being in the Langhorne stands and watching some of the most talented drivers in the country rounding the first turn. What a great concept the Race of Champions was. This photo shot by Washington D.C. photographer Bob Williams shows the field of Modifieds being led to the start by the 1960 Chevrolet pace car. New York's Dutch Hoag would win this 1960 edition.

One of the neat things about this race was the innovation that went into the cars getting ready for the weekend. Some drivers had sliding windshields or screens attached to a hinge where they could clear off the dirt buildup. Langhorne was one of the first places I heard where Modifieds had water coolers inside for the long 100 lap grind.

The series of qualifying races leading up to the October event was a neat idea. Winners would get a silver bowl engraved for the event. I can still see the one setting on Baltimore driver Lou Bee's dining room chest for his 1957 win at Westport Stadium.

I sure miss Langhorne and I bet you do also.

02.26.09 George Gwynn Langhorne holds a special place in my life like it does in most of us who where a race fan back in those days. Although just a kid, I grew up with a racing Dad who took me to the Race of Champions each October for my birthday present.

Only being about 5 or 6 years old, when we started attending the races there in the mid-fifities, I distinctly remember the aerial bombs that were used to countdown the time to the start of the race. I remember having to hold my ears each time one was set off. Langhorne was special.....no question and it's sad
that such a great racing venue is no more.
