Senior Moment by Russ Dodge: No Story Needed I took this
picture in 1960, the last season Alcyon Speedway in Pitman, N.J. operated.
It was shot with a Kodak box camera from the back of a pickup in the
infield. |

03.07.09 | 3Wide | Russ, I would have been there on
this afternoon, but I think I was busy being born! (August 1960...) All kidding aside Russ, this site exists because when I was a kid, I thought guys who could build racecars out of junkyard parts, and the guys who would climb into them and risk life and limb were the most amazing people in the world. Still do. And from the amount of visitors we receive on this site, I guess I'm not alone. Photos like this remind me that I really only caught the very tail end of the time when guys drove machines build mostly of parts others had given up on. I was fortunate to have a dad who insisted on teaching me what was most important when I was young, so we did get to East Windsor, Old Bridge, Trenton, Langhorne and maybe Flemington once all before the end of the 60's... which really was the end of the era for strictly homebuilt racecars and the t-shirt wearing guys who drove them. Thoughout the 70's I always rooted for the guys who looked like they were working with mostly homebuilt stuff... Really I was rooting for the guys that were a carry over from what 60's modified stock car racing was, and unfortunately by the time the 80's rolled around, all but a few of them were extinct. Thanks for taking your camera along with you on this afternoon Russ. |

03.07.09 | Ed Duncan | Great picture |
03.07.09 | Oldtimer | Fabulous photo. Racin' as I remember it. |
03.08.09 | John L Polson | Hey Russ, I wonder if our Hudson was
parked near your truck that day. Dad always went to the infield near the
fourth turn so this is how we watched the action. Sometimes my friends and I
would sneak up and hang on the fence to get a closer look. That was until
Dad hollered for us to get back near the car. Plan B was sit on the hood for
a better view. Speaking of a great view check out the spectators hanging in the trees! For kids 10 years old these drivers were our heroes. Hard to believe its almost fifty years since the last checkered flag. I am just glad I was able to be a part of it. With Alcyon Park today transformed to a athletic complex I can still visit and remember great times growing up at Alcyon Speedway. |
03.08.09 | 3Wide | I saw some red in the trees above Tas, and
thought it might be somebody up there getting a free look. Reminds me of a story from Chris Economaki's book where he was announcing somewhere and the promoter was mad that people were sneaking a free view from the woods along the backstretch. He had Chris make some kind of announcement to everyone to please be very careful of the poisonous snakes if you are thinking of watching from the backstretch area. |
03.10.09 | Steve Cameron | Although I am too young to have visited Alcyon, my Dad has great memories of his visits there. Great photo Russ. Thanks for posting. |
03.12.09 | Sam14 | Saw all these cars/driver combos @ Naz. or
Flem. Never went to any SJ dirt tracks till 99 (BP). Please tell me the "Maul Missle" won! |
