The Perfect "10" Body!

Why I have been a Modified stock car fan since a young age was because of the way the cars looked and sounded. I never even seen this car race, but when I printed this photo, I thought this car has all the reasons that made me a Modified fan.

That big right front tire and the neatly trimmed fender just went together so well. This '37 Ford still has the original grille, which I always thought was a classic. I read once where the 1937 Ford was not as popular to the public as the 1936. That was not true in the racing world as the 1937 coupe and coach made a better looking race car in my opinion.

Add in the overhead V8 engine neatly tucked under the full hood, the Mooneye covered headlights and you have the classic example of a Modified stock car.

I may be partial to East Coast stock cars of the day, but think we had some of the best looking bodies in the 50's and early 60's.

And finally the lost art of hand lettering. Look at the numbers and words on this coupe and picture a sign painter bend over with his tools, painting this car. There were not many removable body panels back then. He crawled all over a freshly painted full bodied Modified to work his craft.

Just remember sitting in the stands at a season opener watching all the freshly painted and polished cars rolling out for warmups. Man that was a time.

09.25.09 Chuck Hassler The date on this photo would be 63 or 64. Modifieds before 63 only ran special shows at Reading. The car is Junior Northstine
09.29.09 Charlie Miller I agree Larry , That is one nice looking body ! Add the fact it has running boards ,and a windshield , what more could you ask for . One thing, you say this is Reading , but it looks like he has asphalt tires on .
11.26.09 Pete Lovell That is Junior Nothstein....no "r". He and his dad owned the Ford dealership in Kutztown, PA for many years. The 427 Ford engine in the car came from Holman and Moody and was extremely fast at Reading. Junior ran a very limited schedule and never had much success, and at least one really bad wreck, but he was always fun to watch. The tires on the car in the photo are certainly asphalt tires, but I'm not aware of any asphalt races that car ran.
12.05.10 Jane Graeff When Junie was still a teenager back in the late '50s, he wanted to race at Reading. My father's (Bill Graeff) '34 coach, #750, was wrecked on a Friday night by our regular driver. Junie had a deal for my dad. He would give dad a '37 slant back sportsman that he was storing, and dad could swap-in the '34 flathead running gear and let Junie drive. It was a win-win situation. My dad got a free chassis and Junie got to race at Reading.
